The Georgia gymnastics team will hold its first official practice of the fall Saturday morning in preparation for the 2014 season.
The Gym Dogs return 11 gymnasts from a year ago including All-Americans Lindsey Cheek, Chelsea Davis, Kaylan Earls, Brandie Jay, Sarah Persinger and Brittany Rogers. Georgia is coming off a Super Six appearance at the 2013 NCAA Championships.
“We’re going to work on some of the basics on each event right off the bat,” said head coach Danna Durante. “The intensity and pace at which we practice will be different from when it’s voluntary, and the freshmen haven’t been through that yet.
“We set our goals in a team meeting and talked about how important every turn and every drill is. Whether it’s something complicated or simple stretching, everything has a purpose. We want to be ready to start the season strong. We open the season on the road, so we need to be mentally rock solid, healthy, fit and ready to go.”
The Gym Dogs have added six freshmen to the team this fall including Ashlyn Broussard (Plano, Texas), Kiera Brown (Newport News, Va.), Lauren Johnson (Atlanta), Morgan Reynolds (Athens, Ga.), Beth Roberts (Tifton, Ga.) and Rachel Schick (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.).
Georgia will hold its practices on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons in most weeks. The Gym Dogs open the 2014 season at Oklahoma on Jan. 10.
