Has Georgia landed head-first into a pool of be-careful-what-you-wish-for? Georgia’s defensive coordinator hunt is underway.
My mathematically challenged poll concluded that 11 out of 10 Dawgs wanted Todd Grantham gone. He is. Now what?
The rumor mill is churning out Kirby Smart to UGA stories by the dozen and our sources tell us that there is some truth to the speculation. However, my guess is that any talks that may have occurred were not direct, leaving the Mr. Smart free to deny ever talking to UGA if a deal can not be reached.
Let’s assume the Mr. Smart opts to remain at Alabama, what then?
Kevin Steele - Director of Player Personnel at Alabama
Pat Narduzzi - Defensive Coordinator Michigan State
Randy Shannon – Linebacker coach Arkansas
The three possible candidate listed above are products of my imagination. No inside information whatsoever – just casting about for some names.
Feel free insert your guesses below.
@ecdawg_BI Didn't Clemson give Kevin Steele the boot after WVU hung 70 on them in the Orange Bowl?
Let's not get our hopes up about Smart coming back to UGA to be our DC. Seriously, why would he want to leave Alabama to come here (excluding his Alum status)? Look, I love my Dawgs as much as anyone else that reads this site, but we're talking about leaving arguably the best program in the country that has won 3 of the last 5 championships to come to a perennial underachieving, do-the-least-with-the-most program that still lives through a championship that we won over 30 years ago. He's also gets to sit under the Saban umbrella....everyone knows that is Saban's defense. How much does Kirby actually have to do over there? Throw in the mess that our current D has looked like. Does he really want to deal with fixing all of the issues and lack of discipline?
The only, and I mean THE ONLY, thing that could possibly draw Kirby Smart back to UGA is throwing him the "Head Coach in Waiting" title alongside making him about the highest paid Assistant Coach in the country. Even then I have my doubts. He's in line for a HC job at a big school in the next year or two anyway.
PS. Sorry if I sound like I'm putting our team down....but those are the facts, like it or not.
With as much talent as our defense has, there is not an excuse to be able to draw the top Def Coord's to our program, not to mention for our defense to play much better than what they have.
Kirby Smart should be priority number 1. He is the best candidate out there IMHO and a complete package as a recruiter and a DC. I know there are some fans that say "No" to this because he spurned us back 2010, but there was a lot going on behind the scenes to keep from signing with Georgia at the time. What were those things? Some politics, promises Bama and Saban made, and Garner still being on Georgia's staff. For the folks that think there is no way for us to get Smart, this time around, 2014, is different than 2010 based on the reasons above I just mentioned.
Ed Orgeron should be on the list, and David Gibbs as well.
I really like Narduzzi at Michigan State as well, and we have talked on threads throughout the season on replacement DCs for Todd Grantham, I put him down along with many others. There is a big BUT here though. I don't see him leaving Michigan State for the SEC. Don't ask me why, but it is just a feeling in my gut.
Olivadotti and Wilson are both good coaches; however, Wilson is a better d-line coach than DC at this point, and Olivadotti might have too much going on in the personal front to be an effective DC. Georgia needs to go out and hire a guy that is currently or has been a successful major college DC.
To sum up my top 3 guys:
As much as I rag on Bozo, he's a pretty legit coordinator. Bobo's offense + Kirby's Defense = Success (also a pipe dream). I am not sure who we will get, but I got a feeling it's not going to be a big name.
With that said, I think we should go hard at Narduzzi.
I believe there is going to be to much wishful thinking. Lacatos and Grantham left for specific reasons and it was because they knew that this program wasn't going to get any better with the recruits they brought in and the ones they are leaving out to hang. Grantham left for selfish reasons and I get that, but who would want to inherit this lack luster defense? I vote to promote Wilson and look for a great special teams coach!!!
Randy Shannon??? Are you kidding me? Go back and look at what he did at Miami. Completely destroyed that program. You think grantham was bad? Please don't mention that name again
I think Narduzzi may be the best DC in college but I don't know how well he would recruit in the south. I also don't see him leaving the Midwest either.
Randy Shannon is a guy I like. He had some good defenses at UM and holds his players accountable. I would not be upset if he were hired.
Ol Kirby is obviously the fan favorite but will he do as well flying solo? I do like he's bringing 3-4 which would help with Carter and could pull Christian Miller and he'll do a much better job at keeping all.the top players in state. For those saying he should be given the HC in waiting title would be a major slap in the face to Bobo. Bobo has produced the past two seasons as his offenses have been the most productive UGA offense's ever. He's also is a great recruiter and elite when it comes to producing QBs
Narduzzi was the first name on my list last night when I heard CTG was gone. Here is the list that keeps coming up on the sites I visit:
Pat Narduzzi-curent Mich St DC who only makes $557,000 a year
Clancy Pendergast (USC interim who did very well, but now has no job)
Randy Shannon-current LB's coach at Arkansas.
Kirby Smart-I think he is at Alabama ;)
Kirk Olivadotti-LB coach at UGA
Chris Wilson-D-line coach UGA-but he did not fare to well in that position at MSU
Bobo is good friends with Smart, and will be advocating for him I am sure.
Shannon is a great recruiter and a defensive genius, and stuck in a nowhere slot with Bielema.
Pendergast negative is he is a west coast guy, has few recruiting contacts in the southland. But he does run a 3-4
Narduzzi; he had some stud defenses over the last few years, and he recruited those kids in the talent vacuum of the midwest...and he is due a raise. You can't tell me $850,000 would not get him. He runs a 4-3 I think(?)
that's all I've got.
Todd Orlando the DC at Utah State is a good candidate. He is getting looked at by Cal and Oregon. He attended Wisconsin, but coached at FIU before Utah St.
@dawgofdasouth The article doesn't state all Dawg fans wanted him gone, but it states "10 out of 11."
Reading the boards here and at other sites, that is about right. Close to 90% were ready to lynch Grantham and the remaining 10% thought he at least deserved 1 more year.
I don't know if he was pushed out, didn't feel welcome, or just decided he didn't like the pressure of coaching at UGA and went to a less stressful job for more money. Only a few people truly know that probably.
Its done and there isn't any looking back, but whatever happens going forward, UGA and CMR need to hit a home run with the DC hire.
@Bulldawg Bob2I think I would rather have Pendergrast, and I want Orgeron to never set foot on our campus.
@Okefenokee Dawg Well then, how do you explain a very average to sometimes good defense in 2012 that was laden with as many as 7 future NFL guys on the roster who are playing for NFL teams in 2013 that CTG and Lakatos coached?
BTW, the front 7 of the defense played well this year and got better from game 1 to game 12, but it was the pass defense that was horrible. I think there was more on CTG and Lakatos leaving than you think. I think that has been building since the Vandy loss.
And there is talent on the roster that is not the problem. Tray Matthews is a safety that could start for any SEC team or college football team for that matter when he is healthy; however, he dealt with several injuries this year that kept him from being able to play the majority of the season and be 100%. Reggie Wilkerson blew out his knee over the summer, and he was going to be a starter and a good one at that. JHC is talented, but he needs to get his head screwed on right. Tramel Terry could end up being a better safety than JHC and as good as Matthews.
How do you explain our DBs playing 7 to 10 yards off the LOS and never pressing opponent WRs?
I could go on, but I won't. However, I will say as much as like Coach Wilson, he is a great d-line coach, but no to promoting him to DC. Georgia needs to get a proven major college DC at this point and juncture in the program.
@Okefenokee Dawg I don't think the defensive coordinator can jump ship then claim it was because of the recruits brought in or the players currently on the field. Grantham has a HUGE role in all of that so it all rests on his shoulders.
@Okefenokee Dawg What roster are you looking at?
@Rosezeee Randy Shannon .. you can't deny what the guy has done as a DC. We aren't looking at him for a HC gig for crying out loud and the guy can land recruits in a big way.
@OconeeDawg706 Bobo could not produce at end of season when he had to rely on young receivers and youthful nonproduction is why ya'll dizzy dawgs wanted CTG gone
@ZippyMorocco I hope he doesn't become disgruntled like Garner did if he is skipped over. Personally, I will almost kill to be the line coach at UGA. The pay is more than I will ever make, plus no hassle of being the overall coordinator.
He has my dream job.
@ZippyMorocco As you know, Wilson was co-DC at Missy State prior to coming to UGA
Orgeron is shady. My Ole Miss and Tenn buddy (I am ashamed to say I have one) said that everyone off and on campus at OM and UT knew Orgeron was dirty and even though he brought talent in, it was most likely done in a shady way.
Every coach looks like an all star when the talent is there and fundamentals are in place. Yes we had some serious athletes that I believe made CTG looked like the answer we were waiting for. The real test is what happened this past season when all the supreme players are gone and you have to replace and coach them up. (Failed)! Now I do believe in a couple of years when our freshmen become accustomed to the system the they may allow fewer points per game but who really wants to wait for that?
BTW, thank goodness we had a great defensive line coach that kept the pressure off the secondary some of the time. Even Coach Wilson stated at the begining of the season that he was waiting for someone on the line to step up and make plays. They did and that is what a good coach does! Injuries happen and that is when your recruits that you brought in are supposed to step up and make plays, not be superstars, but just make plays.
Why would you not want Wilson or coach as the DC??? Even though he had a rough go if it at Miss St. he is still a great coach and who do you know has ever had a good career at Miss or Miss St?
Oh, if I was Grantham I wouldn't claim it either. The proof is in the product he fielded this past season. If he was that good, then he could have used the Louisville job as a barganing tool to stay at UGA.
@Rosezeee I vote for an all out blitz to get Kirby
@Okefenokee Dawg Wilson did a good job at Mississippi State, and I do think he is a great coach; however, he as had 1 year on the d-line. I would prefer to leave him at that position for the time being and develop the d-line that much more. Maybe whomever the incoming DC is, he and CMR can offer Wilson a co-DC title over the next year and groom him to be the DC in waiting.
@Okefenokee Dawg Agree entirely, except, as I believe you are pointing out, UGA wouldn't have made much effort to keep him
