Alex Hugo picked up two more weekly honors for her performances last week, garnering National Player of the Week recognition by both USA Softball and College Sports Madness. The honors come one day after she was named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week. They are the first national honors for a Georgia player this season.

Hugo led the No. 15/17 Georgia softball team to a 4-0 record last week, including a sweep of Mississippi State over the weekend. She went 7-fo-13 at the plate for a batting average of .538. She also led the team in hits (7), runs scored (6), RBI (7), home runs (3) and slugging percentage (1.308). She recorded a hit in each of the games over the weekend, including home runs in each of Georgia’s three games against Mississippi State. She also extended her streak of reaching base safely to 26 games.

The Olathe, Kan., native was brilliant in the SEC series against Mississippi State, hitting at a .600 clip over the three games. She was responsible for the game winning hit and run in each of the games, with each coming by way of the home run. On Friday, she scored the game’s lone run when she belted a solo home run off the scoreboard.

Hugo delivered a walk-off home run in each of the next two games to seal the series sweep for the Bulldogs. She delivered a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the fifth inning in the second game of the series against Mississippi State. With the bases loaded and one out, Hugo came to the plate and hit a towering home run over the right centerfield wall for a walk-off grand slam that gave the Bulldogs the 11-2 win.

In the second game of the day, and the third of the series, Hugo again was the hero, leading off the bottom of the fifth inning with a solo home run that sealed the 9-1 win and the SEC series sweep.

With her three home runs last weekend, she became the first Georgia player to reach double-digit home runs with 11. She also leads the Bulldogs in home runs RBI and slugging percentage. She also leads the SEC in home runs and is one of just three players to have hit double-digit home runs this season.

Hugo and the Bulldogs return to action on Wednesday, March 19 when it hosts the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs at 6 p.m.
