SEC/Pac-12 Showdown: 4 Ranked Teams in Athens This Weekend


[break] Four nationally ranked teams – including three in the top-10 – will be in Athens this weekend for the SEC/Pac-12 Showdown Saturday and Sunday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. No. 1 USC, No. 4 UCLA, No. 7 Georgia and No. 17 Florida will play matches in the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Facility. On Saturday, Florida will take on USC at 10 a.m., followed by Georgia vs. UCLA at 2 p.m., then Sunday’s schedule features Florida vs. UCLA at 10 a.m. and Georgia vs. USC at 2 p.m.


[break] [break] ABOUT THE SEC/PAC-12 SHOWDOWN: This is the second year of the SEC/Pac-12 Showdown. It was held last year at USC, and the Pac-12 schools won all four matches. Incidentally, USC went on to win the national championship in Athens.
[break] [break] WINNING STREAK: Georgia enters the SEC/Pac-12 Showdown on a 26-match regular season home court winning streak. The streak started April 1, 2012 with a 7-0 win over Vanderbilt, which was the final home match of the regular season. The Bulldogs were 12-0 at home in the regular season in 2013 and 11-0 in 2014.
[break] [break] GEORGIA VS. #1: When Georgia plays USC on Sunday, it will mark the second straight year the Bulldogs have played the nation’s No. 1-ranked team in the regular season. Georgia defeated then-No. 1 Ohio State, 4-3, in a five and a half hour match that was moved indoors due to high winds on March 12, 2014. It was UGA’s first win over a No. 1-ranked team since the Bulldogs defeated Virginia in the semifinals of the 2008 NCAA Championships.
[break] [break] LAST TIME OUT: Eighth-ranked Georgia won a pair of matches last weekend to clinch a berth in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. The Bulldogs defeated Michigan State, 4-1, and Utah, 4-0, in Athens to earn one of 16 spots in the National Indoors Feb. 13-16 in Chicago. Senior Nathan Pasha clinched the victory over Michigan State with a win over a ranked opponent at No. 1, then Austin Smith clinched the win against Utah at No. 2.
