Georgia vs Mississippi State: SEC Opening Weekend for UGA Softball

[su_spacer size=”20″] The eighth-ranked Georgia softball team is set to 20 open its Southeastern Conference schedule this weekend, March 6-8 against the Mississippi State Bulldogs at the MSU Softball Field in Starkville, Miss. Georgia enters the weekend with an overall record of 19-2 and has won each of their last seven games. Mississippi State is 17-3 on the year.

Georgia leads the all time series with Mississippi State 27-23. Georgia swept the series last year, picking up 1-0, 11-2 and 9-1 win during the series. Georgia has won five of the last six contests and nine of the last 11 meetings.

Georgia is 10-8 all-time in SEC openers and 8-6 in SEC openers under Lu Harris-Champer. This season marks the second-straight year that the Bulldogs have faced Mississippi State in the conference opener. Georgia is 2-6 when they open SEC play on the road.

Georgia has surpassed it season total from a year ago in stolen bases. Through 65 games last season the Bulldogs recorded 51 stolen bases. Through 21 games this year, Georgia has stolen 62 bases.

Anna Swafford hit her second inside the park home run of the season on Wed., March 4 against Wright State. She also hit an inside the park home run against Coppin State on opening weekend. She has three inside the park home runs in her career.

Niaja Griffin highlighted the doubleheader against Wright State, going 4-for-6 with a double, a triple and two singles. She also scored two times and drove in three. In the past seven games, Griffin is hitting .615 with eight hits, two doubles, a triple, three RBI, six runs, two walks and is 3-for-3 on the base paths.

Georgia returns home next week to host Savannah State on Tuesday, March 10 in a doubleheader that is set to begin at 2 p.m. The Bulldogs will then host No. 5/4 Alabama at Jack Turner Stadium. The three-game series begins Friday, March 13 at 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday’s 2 p.m., game will be televised on the SEC Network.
