[su_spacer size=”20″] The Georgia men’s golf team stands seventh after the first round of the Southeastern Conference Championship on Sea Island Golf Club’s Seaside Course on Friday.
[su_spacer size=”40″] The Bulldogs fired a 2-over-par 282 and are 13 shots in back of Alabama’s 11-under-par 269. LSU (6-under 274) is second, followed by Auburn and South Carolina in third at 5-under 275, and Vanderbilt in fifth at 4-under 276. Arkansas was the only other school under par at 1-under 279.
[su_spacer size=”40″] “We had our chances, but we just didn’t take advantage of them,” Georgia coach Chris Haack said. “The wind was pretty much laying down and the greens were soft, and it was out there for the taking. Other teams were making their putts and getting their birdies today and we just didn’t seem to make too many.”
[su_spacer size=”40″] Freshman Zach Healy paced Georgia on Friday as he signed for a 3-under 67. Healy is tied for fifth, trailing tri-leaders Robby Shelton of Alabama, Matthew NeSmith of South Carolina and Kolton Crawford of Arkansas at 5-under 65.
[su_spacer size=”40″] “I thought I played pretty solid,” said Healy, whose round included three birdies over a 4-hole span. “I managed my game pretty well and really didn’t have any terrible things happen.”
[su_spacer size=”40″] Sophomore Greyson Sigg added an even-par 70, while senior Mookie DeMoss signed for a 2-over 72 and junior Lee McCoy posted a 3-over 73. Junior Sepp Straka had the Bulldogs’ non-counting round of 4-over 74.
[su_spacer size=”40″] The second round of the SEC Championship will begin Saturday at 7:30 a.m. for the Bulldogs, who will be paired with Florida and Tennessee. Live scoring can be found at SECSports.com and GolfStat.com. The SEC Championship will conclude on Sunday.
[su_spacer size=”40″] “Today was a little bit of a struggle, but our team will come out tomorrow and we’ll be there at the end,” Healy said. “It’s a 3-day tournament and you can’t win it on the first day.”
[su_spacer size=”40″] In other news, McCoy was chosen on Friday as a member of the United States Palmer Cup Team. The Americans will play their collegiate European counterparts in a Ryder Cup-style competition June 12-14 at Rich Harvest Farms outside Sugar Grove, Ill.
