WOMEN’S TENNIS: Dawgs Make NCAA Championships All-Tournament Team

[su_spacer size=”20″] Three members of the Georgia women’s tennis team were named to the 2015 NCAA Championships All-Tournament Team, with senior Lauren Herring and freshman Ellen Perez earning recognition at No. 1 doubles and freshman Hannah King taking a place at No. 5 singles.
[su_spacer size=”40″] The awards arrive just two days after the Bulldogs fell 4-1 to UCLA in the semifinals of the tournament. It was Georgia’s best finish at the event since 2009.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Herring and Perez’s honor at the top doubles spot was not surprising given the duo’s undefeated record against three top-15 doubles teams at the tournament. The Georgia pair started the tournament with an 8-6 win against Michigan’s No. 15-ranked tandem of Emina Bektas and Alex Najarian in the round of 16. Herring and Perez then turned in what was perhaps their most impressive showing of the tournament with a dominant 8-2 win over Stanford’s No. 2-ranked team of Taylor Davidson and Carol Zhao in the quarterfinals. In their semifinal match, the Georgia duo won 8-7(1) in a tiebreaker to clinch the doubles point for Georgia against UCLA’s No. 9-ranked pair of Robin Anderson and Jennifer Brady.

[su_spacer size=”40″] Freshman Hannah King was the lone member of the Bulldogs to make the All-Tournament team in singles after going undefeated from court 5. The Dunwoody, Ga., native began the tournament with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Michigan’s Mira Ruder-Hook in the round of 16 and rode that momentum to a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 victory over Stanford’s No. 106 Ellen Tsay in the quarterfinals. She was leading on court 5 against No. 35 Kyle McPhillips in the semifinal match against UCLA when the Bruins clinched the match on another court.
[su_spacer size=”40″] The NCAA Championships All-Tournament Team is the second all-tournament team that King has been named to after earning a place at No. 6 on the SEC All-Tournament Team earlier this season. King finishes her freshman season with a 25-5 record in singles that includes a 5-0 record against nationally ranked opponents and a 21-9 record in doubles.
