Austin Smith and Ben Wagland Open NCAA Doubles Championship with Win

Ben Wagland and Austin Smith during the NCAA second round match against Florida State at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on Saturday, May 9, 2015 in Athens, Ga.
[su_spacer size=”20″] Georgia’s top-ranked and No. 1 seeded Austin Smith and Ben Wagland won their opening round match of the NCAA Doubles Championship, 6-4 7-5 over Lamar’s Michael Feucht and Nikita Lis here Thursday.
[su_spacer size=”40″] The Bulldog tandem – now 17-3 this season – will take on the winner of Texas A&M’s Jeremy Efferding/Jordan Szabo and Wichita State’s Tomislav Gregurovic/Tin Ostojic in the round of 16 Friday at Baylor’s Hurd Tennis Center.
[su_spacer size=”40″] “I thought it was a pretty good match to start the tournament,” Wagland said. “We were coming out of the team tournament where we didn’t play our best against Oklahoma and to bounce back today and win in straight sets give us some momentum going into the rest of the tournament.”
[su_spacer size=”40″] In singles, Smith fell to Louisville’s fifth-seeded Sebastian Stiefelmeyer, 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 in the second round. Smith was serving for the match at 6-5 in the second set, and led 5-4 in the tiebreaker, but Stiefelmeyer rallied to win.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Smith, a junior from Cumming, Ga., finishes the 2014-15 campaign with a 27-11 singles record. He is currently a combined 53-19 in singles and doubles matches this season.
