Recruiting – Dead Period Begins

Dawg Night 2014 Field
[su_spacer size=”20″] Today marks the beginning of a “dead period” in the NCAA Division 1 Bowl Subdivision college football recruiting calendar, which will last until Sunday, July 12th. What does that mean?

CFB Recruiting – The Dead Period

[su_spacer size=”20″]
[su_spacer size=”20″] For the next two weeks, college football coaches and staffers will be limited to only written or electronic communication with prospective recruits. That means no, zilch, nada in-person contact between a school’s coaching staff and prospects, even if the recruit takes a visit to the school’s campus during the “dead period.” What happens after the “dead period” ends on July 12th?
[su_spacer size=”20″] The recruiting calendar will be back in another “quiet period” for the rest of July and the 2014-2015 recruiting calendar. After July 31st, the 2015-2016 calendar will begin, and the “quiet period” will continue all the way through November 29, 2015. What is a “quiet period?”

CFB Recruiting – The “Quiet Period”

[su_spacer size=”20″] The “quiet period” in the recruiting calendar is less restrictive than the “dead period,” in that, it allows for on-campus, in-person contact between prospective recruits and the coaches. However, no off-campus visits may occur. Coaches are allowed to also communicate with recruits through written and electronic communication during this period.

What about Georgia’s Dawg Night?

[su_spacer size=”40″] UGA has held an annual event in July each year since 2008, which falls during the recruiting “quiet period.” Since coaches are not allowed to contact prospective recruits in-person, off-campus during this period, Dawg Night allows the Georgia coaching staff to bring recruits to the University of Georgia campus in Athens.
[su_spacer size=”20″] Last year, over the weekend of the event, the Dawgs received two titanic commitments from highly touted 2016 QB prospect Jacob Eason and 2016 OL prospect Ben Cleveland. Georgia will look to bolster its 2016 class and perhaps even its future classes beyond the class of 2016 with another historic Dawg Night.
