[su_spacer size=”20″] “We appreciate Wayne’s efforts both as an assistant coach and as a head coach at Georgia over the last 25 years,” McGarity said. “We wish him the best of luck with all of his future plans.”
[su_spacer size=”40″] McGarity said a search would begin immediately for a new head coach.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Norton first coached as an assistant at Georgia starting in 1990 under former head coach John Mitchell. Norton held the role of assistant until taking over as the head coach of the Bulldog men and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field teams and the men and women’s cross country teams in 2000.
[su_spacer size=”40″] During his 16 years as head coach, Norton’s track and field teams posted 29 top-20 national team finishes. The Georgia women also won the 2006 Southeastern Conference indoor and outdoor team titles under Norton’s direction.
[su_spacer size=”40″] A New Jersey native, Norton competed for the Howard University track and field team from 1978-81 and received his Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Production from Howard in 1981. He went on to earn a Master’s degree in Journalism from the University of Indiana and was a graduate assistant with the Hoosiers. After an assistant coaching stop with Northern Arizona from 1985-89, Norton joined UGA’s program in 1990.
