Georgia Running Back Sony Michel: “everybody is focusing on their role”

[su_spacer size=”20″] UGA sophomore running back, Sony Michel, talks about staying focused on the task at hand despite the quarterback race and his experience coming in from high school to college, comparing last year’s scrimmage to this year’s.

Sony is asked whether or not he or any of the other players pay attention to the quarterback race:
[su_spacer size=”40″]

I think all the players got the same mindset. We kind of stay away from that. We don’t really think about that because, at this point, everybody is focusing on their role and how can they can play a role on this team to make it a better team. Quarterback is going to handle quarterback.

[su_spacer size=”40″] Sony was asked how many carries he had in Friday’s scrimmage, but he stated he didn’t know for sure. He then talked about which units he worked with:
[su_spacer size=”40″]

I was working with the ones and the twos … It was ones versus ones and twos versus twos. We just mix it up. It depends on how the coaches rotate. We never know when we are going to get in. The coaches just tell us.

[su_spacer size=”40″] Sony was asked if there was a difference between last year’s first scrimmage and Fall Camp compared to this year’s:
[su_spacer size=”40″]

I would say the tempo. Coming in from high school to college, it was just a little bit faster for me. Now, it is what I expected. Now, I already know what the tempo is like. Its simpler.

[su_spacer size=”40″] Sony was asked if the tempo was higher this year compared to last year:
[su_spacer size=”40″]

Yes. Yeah. Those guys coming in from high school are thrown into the fire.

[su_spacer size=”40″] Sony mentioned the tempo of Fall Camp and the first scrimmage, and I’ve heard several players and some coaches that were with the team last year during Fall camp state that the tempo is higher and more upbeat this 2015 Fall Camp.
[su_spacer size=”40″] He also talked about everybody focusing on their role and what they need to do to make the team better. The players and coaches do seem focused on the task at hand. On Bulldawg Illustrated On-Air’s Thursday, Aug. 13th show, the day before the Dawgs’ scrimmage, UGASports.com Rival’s Radi Nabulsi had observed the focus of the players and the team so far through Fall Camp, and it seemed that the players had “bought into” what the coaching staff was wanting them to do.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Yes. That sounds cliché, but it does mean the difference between a team playing as, well, a team versus a bunch of individuals trying to do their own thing and find their own way. The question is, this 2015 Georgia Bulldawg team has bought in now, is focused now, but will that be consistent? Will that focus carry on through the season as the grind of the SEC becomes reality? I don’t know, but I’m looking forward to watching players like Sony Michel test their mettle and put that focus to work this season.
