It’s been just over a year since Matt Stafford dispatched the Alabama Crimson Tide with a 27-yard touchdown pass to Mikey Henderson on Georgia’s first offensive play of OT. So much has happened since then, as evidenced by the current rankings of both Georgia and Alabama, but the sentiments cultivated that night remain the same and are only magnified by this weekend’s epic contest Between The Hedges. Bama has capitalized on a convincing victory of the Clemson Tigers to open the season and have not looked back. Conversely, the Georgia Bulldogs have dropped two spots, relinquishing their number 1 and number 2 spots to the previously invincible Trojans and the Big 12 favorite Oklahoma Sooners, respectively. The anticipated gulf between the two teams has diminished as many national pundits disagree on their ultimate predictions. Everyone seems to agree on one thing – this game looks to be another cardiac collision.
The Bulldawg Nation has been grumbling about a potential media bias and subsequent relegation in the national polls. The Dawgs will be able to make a significant statement this weekend as ESPN GameDay sets up shop on campus for the much-anticipated Bama Blackout. The black jerseys will amp up the fans, but the first time Ben Jones makes contact with Terrence Cody, coined Mount Cody, the players must utilize something stronger than %100 cotton to sustain their aggressive mentality. Many people forget that Auburn took the lead in the third quarter of last year’s contest until the UGA players took over on their own volition. The black jerseys weren’t making Rennie’s tackles or creating lanes for Knowshon. With that said, the Blackout is invaluable to the GameDay experience and allows an outlet for the fans to make a connection with the players on another level. The media will be writing headlines and epitaphs after sixty minutes of football tomorrow night.
In the spirit of the event, I’ve found some famous/humorous epitaphs and explain how I see them as relevant to this weekend’s game. Some of them are a stretch, but they’re interesting nonetheless!
“Here lies a man who knew how to enlist the service of better men than himself.” ~Andrew Carnegie *Although it’s impossible to debate Richt’s merits as a man, his decision to employ Mike Bobo as offensive coordinator has proved fruitful.
“Let no man write my epitaph…” ~ Robert Emmet *In reference to Alabama Coach Cochrans funeral comments.
“If you live life right death is a joke as far as fear is concerned” ~ Will Rogers *The funeral statements don’t seem to affect Richt as he seems to respond, if at all, in jest.
“Tomorrow is the most important thing in life. Comes into us at midnight very clean. It’s perfect when it arrives and it puts itself in our hands. It hopes we’ve learned something from yesterday.” ~John Wayne *Everybody knows this is a big game…
“Against you I will fling myself unvanquished and unyielding, O Death!” ~ Virginia Woolf ~Rennie seems to agree
“The best is yet to come.” ~ Frank Sinatra *I hope so!
“And away we go!” ~Jackie Gleason *Enough said.
