Uga VI passes

Uga_vi

At 11 a.m. this morning, I received a report from DawgPost.com (Josh Kendall) that Uga VI had passed away Friday night.

Just a minute ago, I hung up with Sonny Seiler, Uga’s owner, and he confirmed the Georgia mascot’s passing. Sonny was obviously shaken by the sudden passing saying it was unexpected and unpreventable.

Sonny said Uga VI was on go for the 2008 season and the family was planning on taking him to the Stinchcomb brother’s Countdown to Kickoff in a few weeks.

Sonny wanted folks to know the lineage was protected and Uga VII would be ready but didn’t specify a time.

The private ceremonies are expected to be held early next week.

One Win Shy

Georgia’s spectacular season comes to an end, with a 6-1 loss to Fresno State, which captures the national championship. Steve Detwiler drove in all 6 Fresno runs and Trent Wilson pitched 8 strong innings, fanning nine and walking one, while several Georgia rallies came up just short. An incredible run for the Dogs. Head coach David Perno leading Georgia to the College World Series for the third time in five years, coming up just one win shy of the ultimate dream.

I can’t say enough about this team and coaching staff – their class, heart and character not equal to, but surpassing their wonderful abilities.

David Perno is the best there is. Three trips to Omaha, two SEC championships and he’s 39. For those players moving on, like Gordon Beckham, Josh Fields, Ryan Peisel, Jake Crane, Trevor Holder, Stephen Dodson, Nick Montgomery, Nathan Moreau, Matt Olson – amazing.

Even though this club came up one win shy, for my money, with everything the group faced, it’s my No. 1 at Georgia.

It’ll take some time to heal. But when that’s done, the scope of the accomplishment can be truly appreciated and savored.

So long from Omaha,

Woof! Woof!

This team came up one.

Game Day Weather

Arrived at Rosenblatt Stadium at 2:30 cst and it’s been dreary, rainy and overcast all day. There are some breaks in the huge skies here, but the forecast is calling for a chance for showers all day. So we’ll see. What neither team wants to happen is to start, get a few innings in and then have it postponed. Wednesday looks nice in the afternoon, but rain is in the forecast for 9:00-ish in the evening. One thing to keep in mind, ESPN televises the NBA Draft on Thursday and they desperately want to be done with Omaha by then. If we were to try and finish a postponed game Wednesday, and should Fresno win, you’d have to think they’d push Game Three to Thursdday. You’d think. It’s right at 3:00 cst, 4:00 est, three hours before first pitch and it’s pouring down rain – started right as I was writing. The tarp is on the field and the surface at Rosenblatt Stadium drains great. Keep your fingers crossed.

Fresno State Evens Series

Trailing Georgia 5-0 heading to the bottom of the third, Fresno State unleashed an awesome offensive attack, scoring 15 runs over the next three frames to build a nine-run lead and cruise to a 19-10 victory. The 19 runs is the most allowed by Georgia this season. Nick Montgomery and Stephen Dodson, who have had outstanding careers, both were hit hard as the early lead quickly evaporated.

The Dogs had some tough luck, hitting four balls to the track that didn’t quite have the distance. Georgia has been out-homered in Omaha 10-3. One of the game’s biggest plays came in the top of the fourth after the Dogs had tied the game at 6-6. With runners on first and second and a 3-2 count to Matt Cerione, Gordon Beckham broke for third on the pitch, which appeared to be low. Cerione took, but was rung up for strike three and a stunned Beckham was thrown out at third to end the frame. Fresno would strike for five in the bottom of the inning and that was essentially all she wrote. What stings about the play is karma. In his two prior at bats, Cerione walked. In the one that followed he was hit. Same premise with David Thoms, who had his first ever three hit game. The singles came in the third, fifth and seventh. In his first at-bat with the bases loaded and two outs, he came up empty. Sometimes timing and placement of production in baseball can drive you nuts. Georgia got 15 hits, 14 singles. Fresno had two homers, two doubles and a triple amongst its 19 hits.

The winner of Game Two always has the momentum. You’ve either tied it up or swept.

Nathan Moreau will pitch for Georgia, Fresno can choose between an outstanding righty and very good southpaw.

Both teams are 5-0 in NCAA Tournament elimination games.

Mike Martin, Florida State’s legendary coach said it best after the Seminoles were the first team to be eliminated from Omaha. “It’s phenomenal to get here. But there will be six other coaches that follow me to the podium disappointed. There can be only one national champion.”

The Dogs and Fresno State are both one win away.

Game Three

Georgia will call on Nathan Moreau, Alex McRee, Dean Weaver and Joshua Fields today to try and slow down the powerful bats of Fresno State. It’s been a spectacular season, and Georgia baseball has drawn a following like never before.

It’s hot today. Georgia won the coin flip last night and will be the home team.

In tribute to the great Erk Russell, “just one more time!”
