This is surreal, it sunk in today that the Dogs are going to play for the national championship. To get an extra advantage, it would be great if Fresno State and North Carolina played a long, draining game tonight. If the Tar Heels win, they’ve got to be thinking there’s no way they could lose in the championship series three consecutive seasons.
Omaha has been a blast, an amazing experience. Our fan support has been tremendous, and I’ve felt all along that this is the best following the program has ever had.
What a run. Hopefully the Dogs have “just two more” in ‘em!

Off to the stadium for Game One of the championship series. Fresno State is smoking hot, and we’re all way over cinderella. They’ve beaten Long Beach, Arizona State, Rice and North Carolina en route to the title tilt. It’s not like the bracket fell into place for them. This is a great team. They can really swing it and defend. It’s going to take a lot of runs to win this thing. Georgia’s starting pitching has not been strong here. But I feel like Trevor Holder will be very good tonight. He’s tough and gritty, even when Holder doesn’t have his best stuff, he battles and keeps the Bulldogs in the game. I like Georgia tonight.

It’s on to the national championship series for Georgia, which survived a scary 4-run 9th, to top Stanford 10-8 to post a 3rd-straight thrilling victory. Georgia bats keyed the victory. Rich Poythress tied an Omaha record with three doubles, while going 4-5 with four RBI’s. Joey Lewis had three RBI’s on a pair of clutch two-out singles and Ryan Peisel launched a three-run fifth inning homer. Georgia’s first two victories over Miami and Stanford were come-from-behind classics, with the Cardinal making the Dogs sweat Saturday. North Carolina needing two wins to advance past Fresno State, which is in the driver’s seat. Rain again a factor, as a storm swept through delaying first pitch.
The title series gets underway at 7:00 est Monday.
This is surreal and incredible – two wins away from the national championship. To quote Bogey, “it’s the stuff that dreams are made of.”

Postponed until Saturday due to Thursday’s rains, Georgia’s players are anxious to return to play. The Bulldogs will practice for a third straight day – at Creighton University this afternoon. Georgia last played on Monday night, downing Stanford in a 4-3 thriller.
David Perno’s squad is in the driver’s seat of “Backet A,” with two chances to get one win. The Cardinal, which staved off elimination via Wednesday’s 8-3 win over Miami, would have to beat the Dogs Saturday and then again Sunday to move on to the national championship series.
So while Georgia has been off for a while, the Bulldogs and the rest of the field are well aware that a stretch of five games in five days could be coming up. That could be even more for North Carolina or LSU. The Tar Heels were leading 1-0 in the first Thursday night when the rains came. That game will be completed Friday, with the winner having to twice beat Fresno State.
It’s interesting that the two Bulldogs were the biggest underdogs, Georgia and Fresno State had the longest Las Vegas odds to win the respective brackets. But the two Bulldogs sit in the driver’s seats.
Trevor Holder is still slated to start Saturday, though is Georgia is fortunate enough to win, that extra day back means a Wednesday return for the championship series would be unlikely.
Georgia’s pitching depth could be a big key here. The bullpen has been lights out, allowing just one earned run in 11 innings.
But the Dogs have been far from their best. The bats and starting pitching could certainly be called on to do more.
Holder is incredibly tough, sporting a 3-0 career post-season record. He didn’t have his best stuff against Miami, just missing on several pitches, but his grit helped keep the Dogs in the game.
If Stanford wins Saturday, Nathan Moreau would likely start Sunday.
The Cardinal have yet to announce their starter.
What a trip its been. Ready to retake the field, and hopefully move on to the national championship series!

In a savvy move by 2008 Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year David Perno, Nathan Moreau will start Saturday’s game with Stanford. The plan had been to go with Trevor Holder, who had been the Bulldogs opening night SEC starter throughout the year. But with rain pushing the schedule back a day and Stanford needing two wins, Perno and standout pitching coach Brady Wiederhold, made the call to go with Moreau. That means that Holder would either pitch Sunday’s game to get into the national title series (should Stanford win Saturday) or pitch in the championship series.
First pitch Saturday is set for 2:00 est.
