Daily Dawg Thread – 30July2019: Sewell Has UGA in His Top-8

Over the weekend, one of the top linebackers in the 2020 recruiting class released his top schools on his dad’s birthday, July 28th, and the University of Georgia found itself counted among Noah Sewell’s top-8. The list also included five other SEC programs – Alabama, Florida, LSU, Tennessee, and Texas A&M – as well as Ohio State and Oregon. Sewell chose his top-8 from over 34 scholarship offers.

Sewell is a 6-foot-2 and 266 lbs rising senior out of Orem, Utah where he plays at MLB and RB for the Orem Tigers high school football team. Last year, for his junior season campaign, Sewell racked up over 100 tackles including 16 for a loss, 4 QB sacks, 2 interceptions, and 4 forced fumbles. 247Sports rates him as a 5-star prospect and the No. 2 ILB and No. 1 player overall from the state of Utah as well as the No. 23 player nationally. Rivals rates Sewell as a 4-star prospect and the No. 2 ILB and No. 1 player overall from the state of Utah as well as the No. 33 player nationally.

Of course, the question that is asked, and I was asked this on Twitter, has UGA ever signed a prospective student-athlete in football from the state of Utah?

Not that I can remember, but alas my memory isn’t as good as it used to be. However, I can tell you that the Bulldawgs have been diligently recruiting Sewell. Back in May, Georgia coaches Glenn Schumann and Dan Lanning made back-to-back trips out to Utah to visit with Sewell and his family. So far, Sewell has only scheduled one official visit, to Texas A&M on the weekend of Oct. 11th, which is when the Aggies host Alabama. Sewell has also taken some unofficial visits, both in June, to Alabama and Tennessee.

UGA faces stiff competition from west coast PAC-12 program Oregon. Sewell’s older brother, Penei, is a sophomore offensive lineman for the Ducks. He also has two other brothers who play college football out west, Nephi, a junior DB with the home-state school, the Utah Utes, and Gabriel, a senior LB with the Nevada Wolfpack. But the Bulldawgs are very much in this recruiting race. He likes Georgia, has a good relationship with Schumann and Lanning, and I expect him to come to Athens for a visit before he announces his decision.
