The Georgia Football team is off to an amazing start heading into their “work” week before Florida, but Kirby Smart is surprisingly not focused on the Gators… not just yet.
Smart knows that his team still has a ton of improvements to make if they want to compete with top tier teams so he is taking this Bye week or work week as he likes to call it to work on his team. Rather than immediately focusing on how to prepare for the Gators, Smart and his staff are focused on the team improving itself and recovering.
“To be honest with you, I haven’t even thought about it. We’re not even thinking about Florida. I really don’t even know what you’re talking about,” said Smart. “I’m worried about our team for these two days and we’ll get to work on Florida probably Thursday and focus on them then. We’re working on our team. We’ve got to get us better, and we’ve got a lot we can get better at, and that’s the focus right now.”
One way that Smart and his team can get better is by getting some of their best players like Reggie Carter and Trenton Thompson back from injury. Recovery for this team and allowing these guys to get some added rest will definitely play a huge part in the team getting back to 100%, but Smart is not going to allow them to get too comfortable with rest.
“I look at the recovery part as Sunday and Monday, which they had two days off. I look at Friday, Saturday, Sunday as three days off. So that’s five days off in an eight-day window,” said Smart. “We’re gonna go to work Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. There’s no recovery Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. We’re working, and we’re working to get better. You don’t get better by going out there and kinda halfway doing it.”
Thompson and Carter were both practicing some in the Bulldogs last practice but there are still other players with nagging injuries that could return to full strength before the Bulldogs face the Gators. However, as of right now, Smart has made it clear that the main focus is still on improving the team.
