Sabrina Vega Named SEC Gymnastics Specialist of the Year

University of Georgia junior gymnast Sabrina Vega has been named the Southeastern Conference Gymnastics Specialist of the Year, it was announced Thursday. 

The Carmel, New York native ranks eighth in the country on balance beam, second in the SEC, and moonwalked her way to a 9.925 National Qualifying Score (NQS) with seven scores of 9.900 or better this season. She notched a new career-high of 9.950 at Florida and earned five event titles on beam.

Majoring in Biology, Vega sits as the 13-ranked performer in the country on floor, and scored a nearly perfect 9.975 against Kentucky to record a career-best. This season she hit new career marks on all three events that she competes—a 9.90 on vault, 9.950 on beam, and 9.975 on floor.  

Additionally, she earned WCGA First Team All-America honors on beam and Second Team honors on floor.

Vega and the GymDogs are set to host the NCAA Athens Regional April 4-6 in Stegeman Coliseum.  No. 8 Georgia will compete in the afternoon session of the second round on April 5 with No. 9 Kentucky, Missouri, and Iowa State, beginning at 2 p.m.
