[break] In recent weeks we’ve heard a chorus of, mainly Big Ten, voices extolling the virtues of freshman ineligibility. Outgoing SEC Commissioner, Mike Slive weighs in with a logical counter-argument based on NCAA’s own new and more stringent eligibility requirements.

[break] One part of the new eligibility requirements allows schools to admit a student-athlete who fails to fully qualify academically as an “academic red-shirt”. In other words, the student can be given aid and can practice but not compete. Thus, those athletes who would benefit from freshman ineligibility will indeed be ineligible to compete while still getting the academic assistance available to scholarship athletes.
