BASEBALL: Dawgs Meet Tech in Atlanta Tonight

Georgia wraps up a season-long seven-game road trip when it faces Georgia Tech in Atlanta. First pitch is set for 6:02 p.m. ET and be available on ACC Network Extra and the Georgia Bulldog Sports Network.

Georgia (29-20, 12-15 SEC) and Ga. Tech (25-20, 19-14 ACC) have their final conference series starting Thursday so both squads will likely use a staff night approach on the mound. Freshman LHP Charlie Goldstein (1-0, 5.17) will start for Georgia. He pitched in relief during the first meeting this year, going 2.1 innings and allowing one run on two hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Tech has not named a starter.

The series with Tech dates back to 1898, and the Bulldogs hold a 215-165-2 edge. Tech claimed the first meeting this year 7-5 in Athens. Georgia has won 13 of the past 17 meetings. Last year, Georgia swept the series as it marked the first three-game consecutive weekend series during the regular season in 59 years. The Bulldogs won 6-5 in Athens, 12-0 in Atlanta and 9-3 at Coolray Field, which serves as the Triple-A home of the Gwinnett Stripers. Proceeds of the neutral site game went to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. In 2021, the teams plan to resume a three-game series.

The Bulldogs finish the regular season at Foley Field with a three-game SEC series against No. 12 Ole Miss. After its 6-1 win over No. 7 Florida Sunday in Gainesville, Georgia has clinched a spot in the SEC Tournament. The event begins Tuesday, May 25 in Hoover, Ala. Georgia’s seed, first opponent and game time will be determined following the Ole Miss series. Foley Field will be at 100 percent capacity for the first time this season for the series with the Rebels. Game times will be 7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and 2 p.m. on Saturday. The annual Senior Day recognition will be held pregame Saturday.

Bulldog redshirt junior right fielder Connor Tate (.346-10-33) has reached base safely in 28 straight games plus has an 11-game hitting streak, both career highs. He was hit by a pitch in the ankle in last Saturday’s contest against Florida and missed the final game of the series, ending a streak of 48 consecutive starts this year. His identical twin Cole, has started 45 games at shortstop this year. He is batting .319-2-20. Cole Tate along with graduate outfielder Riley King (knee) are listed as day-to-day with their injuries. King did not play last Saturday or Sunday.

Redshirt junior second baseman Josh McAllister (.358-9-25) leads the team in batting and ranks second in home runs in both all games and in SEC games where he is hitting an identical .358. For the year, he has played in only 34 games, missing a total of 15 contests due to a hamstring injury that has sidelined him on three separate occasions. This past weekend in the UF series, McAllister batted a team-best .583 (7-for-12) with an RBI and two stolen bases while playing flawless defense.
