BASEBALL: Jonathan Cannon and Connor Tate Named SEC Pitcher and Hitter of the Week Respectively

Fresh of a series win over top-ranked Vanderbilt in Nashville, Georgia’s Jonathan Cannon and Connor Tate have been named the Southeastern Conference Pitcher and Hitter of the Week, the league announced Monday.

Cannon, a 6-6, 216-pound sophomore native of Alpharetta, Ga., tossed a career-high seven shutout innings with nine strikeouts and no walks in a 9-1 series-clinching win over the Commodores Saturday. He limited the SEC’s top-ranked hitting team, which was second in the nation in slugging percentage, to just five singles. Twice, Vanderbilt managed to put two men on to start an inning, and Cannon and the Bulldogs held them in check.  In the fifth inning, the Commodores had runners at second and third with one out, and Cannon came back with strikeouts of the No. 1 and 2 hitters in their lineup.

Vanderbilt hadn’t dropped a home series since 2018 and hadn’t lost a series since 2019 when the Bulldogs beat them in Athens in a top-five showdown. Cannon improved to 2-2 on the year with a 3.38 ERA in six starts.

Tate, a 6-3, 214-pound junior native of Bishop, Ga., led the SEC with a 1.500 slugging percentage last weekend as the Bulldogs ambushed the Commodores in Nashville, outscoring them 25-8 to claim their first series over a No. 1 ranked  team since 1993. He batted .583 (7-for-12) with two doubles, three home runs, six RBI, six runs scored and two walks in leading an offense that tore through Vanderbilt’s staff that led the nation in fewest hits allowed and was second in ERA.

Tate helped set the tone in the opening game of the series, a 14-2 win, as he went 3-for-4 with two home runs, a double, a walk and 3 RBI. In the deciding game of the series, he added three more hits, including a home run and a double and three RBI. In SEC action, Tate ranks among the league leaders with a .391 batting average and six home runs. Overall, Tate is batting a team-best .391 with eight home runs and 23 RBI.

Up next, the No. 20 Bulldogs (20-11, 5-7 SEC) begin a five-game home stand Tuesday at Foley Field. Georgia plays host to Georgia State at 5:02 pm. (SECN+) before returning to SEC action against Kentucky starting Friday.
