University of Georgia pitcher Kevin Smith has been named Southeastern Conference Co-Freshman of the Week, the league announced Monday.

Smith, a 6-5, 204-pound left-hander from Dunwoody, Ga., enjoyed a successful collegiate debut in a starting role to clinch the series against Georgia Southern. Smith fired seven strong inning of two-hit baseball in a 4-1 victory. He was slated to for a midweek start but was moved up to the Sunday spot in the rotation due to a teammate’s illness. He responded by recording seven strikeouts and allowing just one unearned run. Smith was part of the Bulldog staff that posted a 1.61 ERA in the series and held the Eagles to a .149 batting average.

Smith shared the league’s weekly honor with Tristan Pompey (Kentucky) after he batted .500 (5-for-10) with three home runs, a double, a triple and six RBI for the 25th-ranked Wildcats. The SEC named Jeren Kendall (Vanderbilt) the Player of the Week while Alex Lange (LSU) was selected as the Pitcher of the Week.
