Will Georgia’s 2017 opener be remembered as the end of Jacob Eason’s career at the University or the debut of Jake Fromm? I’m thinking, the latter. In fact, ten years from now Jacob Eason will, likely, be an obscure footnote in UGA lore compared to Jake Fromm’s Mount Rushmore-like possibilities. However, last September the prospect of facing Notre Dame and beginning SEC play with a freshman substitute at the key offensive position was not a confidence builder, to say the least.
 
 
Seasoned observers could not imagine the heights that Kirby’s Dogs would climb with their all-world quarterback injured and a true freshman (who failed to supplant the sophomore despite being an early enrollee) being forced into the breach. Bulldawg Illustrated’s Murray Poole noted in his game summary:
 
 

Of course, when Eason went down ‑ and he will get an MRI on his left knee this coming week – Kirby Smart quickly sent freshman backup Jake Fromm onto the field and here again, Georgia fans, you have to be happy with the way the Houston County product stepped up to direct the Bulldog offense. He completed the first two pass attempts of his college career to Isaac Nauta and Mecole Hardman and showed outstanding poise under fire in finishing the night with 10-of-15 completions for 143 yards including a 34-yard touchdown strike to Javon Wims.

OK, final say, this was after all Appalachian State, an FCS team just two years ago, that the Bulldogs dispatched without working up too much of a sweat. We’ll know a great deal more about Kirby’s second Georgia edition late next Saturday evening when the dust has settled at Notre Dame’s famous stadium.

 
 
A Rose Bowl victory and trip to the national championship game, if mentioned as possibilities, would have been seen as crazy talk after losing one’s starting quarterback in the season opener – and Notre Dame loomed the very next week…
