Daily Dawg Thread – 13August2019: Update on UGA Commit, Jared Zirkel

Kickers and punters, as well as long snappers, often get overlooked by fans when it comes to recruiting and even by the recruiting services. So today, we are going to show a little love their way and look at current University of Georgia 2020 commit Jared Zirkel.

Zirkel is a 6-foot-3 and 190 lbs kicker out of Tivy High School in Kerrville, TX. He committed to UGA back on June 13th.

Both 247Sports and Rivals rate Zirkel a 3-star prospect, but I don’t know if I have known either of those two recruiting services to rank a kicker or punter higher than that. It’s better to look at what Kicking World or Kohl’s Kicking has to say.

Kohl’s rates Zirkel a 5-star, division-1 prospect and the No. 12 kicker in the 2020 class. Zirkel participated at Kicking World’s Austin Texas ‘nights under the lights’ and here is how he fared.

“On 8/4/19 Jared dominated a field of 30 very talented kickers winning the Golden Boot with a 60-yard field goal and kickoff competition with several kicks with big hang times over 4.15-4.25 seconds.”

And here is a video of that impressive 60-yard “boot.”

Zirkel also won the 2019 Georgia Football Kicking Competition at UGA back in June, beating out over 150 competitors.

And Zirkel doesn’t just show off in camps. He booted a 59-yard field goal last year as a junior in a September home game versus Fredericksburg High School.

So is UGA’s coaching staff counting on Zirkel to be the Bulldogs 2020 kicker?

Georgia has 5 placekickers on the roster currently. Rodrigo Blankenship has started the last two season for the Dawgs and is pretty entrenched as the starter for the upcoming season, but he is a senior and 2019 will be his last in red and black. Sophomore Jake Camarda handled the Bulldawgs’ punting duties last year and is expected to do so again in 2019, but he can handle placekicking duties. Brooks Bruce is a redshirt walk-on placekicker from Greater Atlanta Christian School who is the No. 2 kicker currently behind Blankenship. Jake Podlensky is a redshirt freshman walk-on kicker from Glynn Academy. He kicked the game-winning field goal for the Black Team in the 2019 G-Day game back in April. Then there is freshman walk-on placekicker/punter Noah Chumley from Savannah Christian school whose dad, Donald Chumley, played for UGA on the defensive line back in the ’80s.

Given that Zirkel is being brought in as a scholarship kicker, the coaching staff expects he can come in and compete for the starting placekicker duties in 2020; although, Bruce, Camarda, Chumley, and Podlensky are not just going to hand it to him.
