Daily Dawg Thread 22 February 2020: Recruiting update on d-lineman Maason Smith

Back during the fall, midway through the month of October, Maason Smith, one of the top defensive lineman in the 2021 recruiting class, included the University of Georgia in his top-10 schools.

The 6-foot-4.5 and 316 lbs Terrebonne High School junior has over 29 scholarship offers with his most recent one coming from Southern California on February 18th, and although he hasn’t released a top-five, he is focusing on Alabama, Florida, Georgia, LSU, and Texas A&M at the moment. That is good news for the Bulldogs.

Georgia lost five seniors off its defensive line from the 2019 team. Defensive ends David Marshall and Justin Young along with defensive tackles Michael BarnettMichail Carter, and Tyler Clark, all of which played in their final year of eligibility with UGA this past season. Senior Julian Rochester is taking a redshirt and returning for 2020, but he along with DeVonte Wyatt and Malik Herring will also be playing in their final year of eligibility this fall.

With the 2020 signing class of Warren Brinson, Jalen Carter, and Nazir Stackhouse, the Dawgs will head into 2021 with 11 d-lineman on scholarship, barring any players declaring early for the NFL or transferring; so, it is important for assistant coach Tray Scott to continue to build on the success he has had and Maason Smith would certainly bolster the Georgia d-line.

247Sports ranks Smith a five-star prospect, the No. 2 DT, the No. 1 player from the state of Louisiana, and the No. 18 overall recruit nationally. Rivals also rates Smith a five-star prospect, ranking him as the No. 1 DT, the No. 1 player out of Louisiana, and the No. 6 overall recruit in the country for 2021. ESPN currently has Maason as a four-star prospect.

Right now, Smith is considered an LSU lean, but he wouldn’t be the first Louisiana prospect that the Bulldogs’ coaching staff has been able to bring east to Georgia.
