A Look at What’s Ahead
Georgia is on the road this weekend for a three-game series at Auburn. The Bulldogs’ final road SEC series begins Friday at 6 p.m., ET, against the Tigers. The 2022 regular season will wrap up next weekend in Athens when Ole Miss comes to town for a three-game series.
T&F: Matthew Boling Adds SEC Award
Georgia junior Matthew Boling was voted the Southeastern Conference Men’s Runner of the Week following his performance at the Georgia Tech Invitational over the weekend, according to a league announcement Tuesday.
Boling, a native of Houston, Texas, was named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Men’s Athlete of the Week for the second time in 2022 earlier in the day. His SEC honor was his second this outdoor season.
Boling shot out of the blocks in the 200-meter dash in Atlanta to top his former school record of 20.06 from last year with a 19.92 into a -0.9 meter/second wind. This made him the No. 10 all-time collegiate performer with the No. 12 all-time collegiate performance. Boling leads the nation in the event and is tied for third in the world this year.
The current wind-legal national leader in the 100m as well, Boling also ran a leg on the winning 4x400m relay after the Bulldog foursome clocked a 3:06.10 with the next team nearly two seconds behind them.
Up Next: The Bulldogs play host to this year’s only home meet, the fifth-annual Torrin Lawrence Memorial, at the Spec Towns Track in Athens, Ga., on Friday-Saturday.
Kirby Smart Set to Compete in 2022 Peach Bowl Challenge
Georgia head coach Kirby Smart will represent the Bulldogs in the 15th annual Peach Bowl Challenge charity golf tournament held on May 3 at Reynolds Lake Oconee outside of Atlanta. A field of 22 current and former college football coaches will compete for a share of a $330,000 charity purse.
The nation’s premier collegiate coach golf event will be played in Two Man Scramble format with Stableford scoring in an 18-hole tournament. This year’s competition will also feature a Skills Challenge that includes Long Drive and Closest to the Pin competitions.
Proceeds from the event benefit charitable foundations selected by the coaches. Coach Smart’s winnings will go to the Kirby Smart Family Foundation, which focuses on being champions in the community by supporting and giving back to needy children and families facing adversity.
“This unique event consistently brings together some of college football’s biggest names each year, all for charity,” Peach Bowl, Inc. CEO and President Gary Stokan said. “These coaches are true competitors, both on and off of the football field, but it’s all for a great cause as each of their charities will be the true winners at the end of the day.”
Since its creation in 2007, the event has contributed a total of $8.73 million in scholarship and charity, helping make the Peach Bowl college football’s most charitable bowl organization.
This year’s field includes an impressive roster of college football greats that features three former Dodd Trophy winners, and a collective group of coaches who have won two national championships, 33 FBS conference championships and boasts 2,423 career wins.
