With senior Trent Phillips and freshman Buck Brumlow leading the way, the third-seeded and 12th-ranked Georgia men’s golf team improved to second on Tuesday in the NCAA Bryan Regional.

Playing Traditions Club’s par-72, 7,146-yard layout, the Bulldogs posted a 3-under 285 to move to 12-under 564. Arizona maintained its lead at 13-under 563, followed by the Bulldogs, host Texas A&M at 10-under 566, Pepperdine at 8-under 568, and Oregon State at 1-under 575.

Following Wednesday’s final round, the top five teams will advance to the 30-team field for the NCAA Championships in Scottsdale, Ariz., May 27-June 1. Kansas is currently in sixth place at even-par 576.

Phillips fired a 2-under 70 on Tuesday to move atop the leaderboard at 6-under 138. Phillips is tied with William Paysse of Texas A&M and Christian Banke of Arizona, and they are one clear of four golfers at 5-under 137.

Brumlow paced the Bulldogs in the second round with a 4-under 68 on the strength of five birdies. Freshman Maxwell Ford signed for a 1-over 73 and junior Nicolas Cassidy registered a 2-over 74. Junior Ben van Wyk had the Bulldogs’ non-counting round of 3-over 75.

After having a 2-shot, first-round penalty overturned late Tuesday, Brumlow improved to eighth at 4-under 140. Ford stands 13th at 2-under 142, followed by van Wyk at 1-over 145 and Cassidy at 6-over 150.

The NCAA Bryan Regional will conclude on Wednesday. The Bulldogs will tee off between 8:30 and 9:14 a.m. and will be paired with Arizona and Texas A&M.

ICYMI: Chick-fil-A Classic Kickoff Time Set

Kickoff for the Georgia-Oregon matchup on ABC in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Classic is set for 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, Sept. 3, in the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

The Oregon vs. Georgia matchup will feature the defending Pac-12 North Division Champion Ducks squaring off with the defending College Football Playoff National Champion Bulldogs. Georgia is making its third appearance in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game after most recently defeating UNC 33-24 in Kirby Smart’s first victory as a head coach in 2016. Meanwhile, Oregon will appear in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game for the first time in the program’s history. This will mark only the second time the two football programs have met after the only previous meeting resulted in a 27-16 home win for the Bulldogs in 1977.

Both teams will battle for The Old Leather Helmet Trophy, one of college football’s newest rivalry-style icons. Traditionally, winners of The Old Leather Helmet don the helmet on the field after the game, starting with the head coach and then rotating from player to player as the team celebrates its victory.

This will mark only the second time the two football programs have met.  The one previous meeting resulted in a 27-16 home win for the Bulldogs in 1977.  The 2022 Georgia-Oregon matchup will mark the Bulldogs’ third appearance in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game.  The Bulldogs previously defeated North Carolina 33-24 in the 2016 and fell 35-21 to Boise State in 2011.  Georgia was scheduled to face off against Virginia to open the 2020 season in Atlanta, but the matchup was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
