Kirby Smart’s contract is now part of the public record thanks to an open records request by Mark Weiszer of the Athens Banner-Herald. To me, the most interesting clause in Kirby’s contract is the one that gives coach Smart the ultimate decision on the timing of his many required public and private appearances.

After enumerating all of Smart’s obligations for appearances on behalf of the University and program sponsors, Weiszer notes:

There is a caveat saying the school understands “Smart’s primary obligation shall be to serve as the head coach of the University’s football team, and as such, agree that any such requests for Smart…shall be subject to his role directing the team, including to, but not limited to its practice, playing and workout schedules, and to the recruitment of potential student-athletes.”

Team and recruiting come first!

Greg is closing in on 15 years writing about and photographing UGA sports. While often wrong and/or out of focus, it has been a long, strange trip full of fun and new friends.
