Former Georgia Diamond Dawgs Gordon Beckham, Joshua Fields, Justin Grimm and Alex Wood made Major League rosters earlier this week. Additionally, Jeff Walters is on the 40-man roster with the New York Mets.

Grimm, now in his fifth year in the majors and third with the Chicago Cubs, was the first to see action in 2016. A reliever, he pitched the eighth inning in the Cubs 9-0 win over the Los Angeles Angels Monday. Also, Beckham pinch-hit and played second base for the Atlanta Braves in a 4-3 loss Monday to the Washington Nationals. Beckham is in his eighth season in the majors as an infielder.

Fields, who is in his fourth year as a member of the Astros bullpen, had their opener against the Yankees in New York rained out. Wood, also in his fourth year in the majors, is a member of the Dodgers rotation. The left-hander is scheduled to start Thursday against the Giants in San Francisco.

Beckham (White Sox) and Fields (Mariners) were first round picks in 2008. Grimm was a fifth round selection of the Cubs in 2010 and Wood went in the second round of the 2012 draft to the Braves.

Walters went to Major League Spring Training with the Mets and remains on the club’s 40-man roster. Currently, the right-hander has been assigned to their Double-A affiliate in Binghamton. Walters pitched for Georgia from 2009-10 and was a seventh round pick of New York in 2010.

Along with Walters, former Bulldogs Kyle Farmer (Dodgers) and Nelson Ward (Padres) saw action during Major League Spring Training games this year. Walters made four relief appearances, Farmer played in six games while Ward saw action in three contests. Farmer was an eighth round pick of the Dodgers in 2013 while Ward was a 12th round selection of Seattle before being traded to the Padres last year.

Farmer, Ward along with former Bulldog outfielders Zach Cone (Texas), Hunter Cole (San Francisco) and infielder Levi Hyams (Atlanta) will begin this season in Double-A. A handful of former Georgia standouts are in Advanced-A or Single-A too. The Minor League season gets underway later this week.
