Georgia Football: Day Eight Spring Practice Report – Defense

There is still a large focus on fundamentals and technique, but speed seemed to be a focus in the Bulldogs practice today as well.

The first thing that caught my eye was how many people were out there today. It seemed to be a large group from the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and there was at least 100 of them. Sprinkled in with all of these visitors were a few recruits.

I saw 2019 OLB KD McDaniel(Committed to Kentucky), his teammate DT Austin Williams, DE Zaylin Wood, and I believe it was Georgia Signee DT Jordan Davis watching coach Scott coach the D-Line.

Missing from the defensive line was Michael Barnett, who has a knee injury. I actually saw him today and his whole leg seemed to be in an air cast and he was on crutches. I also do not remember seeing Justin Young on the defensive line. Bulldogs will need to get those guys healthy as G-Day approaches, but as of right now I don’t like Barnett’s chances of playing in that game.

Scott was very active today and he was super focused on these guys constantly moving and moving fast. He would continuously tell his guys to “Burst, Burst, Burst” and He was super focused on how quickly his guys could move laterally.

Jonathan Ledbetter always stands out in this group and he just seems so quick for his size. However, Malik Herring also looked really good today and I liked seeing his ability to change direction so quickly.

Coach Dan Lanning and coach Mel Tucker both seemed to be focused on power and aggression with their respective groups as I constantly heard them say “Be Violent” and “Strike.” Lanning was the loudest of the coaches today and I heard him give freshman Brenton Cox some compliments multiple times throughout drills so his progress must be coming along very well.

Coach Tucker was telling his guys to drive through as they were working on staying with a running back that was moving laterally and hitting him once he hit a hole. Tucker wanted his guys to drive them back through the hole every time. Ameer Speed did a nice job in this drill.
