As the 2021 college football season comes to an end, so does the tenure of players such as Jordan Davis, George Pickens, and Nakobe Dean. The departure of players like these would leave fans at other universities worried for the future, but not at the University of Georgia. Coach Smart and departing players have made it evident that the Dawgs will be entering the 2022 season confident in the next man up.

During the Spring Practice Opening Day Presser, Kirby Smart was asked about the younger bucks coming in and stepping up (especially on the defensive line) and immediately brought up rising junior, Zion Logue. Smart constantly reiterated Logue’s development both off and on the field saying that he’s “a guy that is prepared to step into a bigger role… He’s a great leader. He’s a great kid. He is the perfect example of a guy that has matured.” Logue spoke to this development in his own interview and gave a shout-out to his teammate Bill Norton pointing out that fans should watch out for him next year.

The linebacker room welcomes the most new faces this offseason with all three starters leaving for the NFL Draft. Rising senior and outside linebacker, Nolan Smith is confident in the skills of “Pop,” or Jamon Dumas-Johnson. “He gets… fumbles and sacks within seconds, so I love him.” Dumas-Johnson should play at middle linebacker in place of Nakobe Dean next year.

On the backside of the defense, lies a name already known for his game-clinching pick-six in the national championship, Kelee Ringo. As if he needed further endorsement, defensive back, Derion Kendrick, raved about him at the Georgia Pro Day. “…he’s going to be the top corner in this [next] draft if he comes out… I feel like he’s going to be a great player just off his… technique.” Kendrick looks forward to seeing Ringo’s progression as a player and plans on staying “on him throughout the season.”

Shifting to the other side of the ball, both George Pickens and Derion Kendrick gave praise to freshman wideout, Adonai Mitchell. When asked, “Who do you think can be the next guy behind you,” Pickens instantly responded, “A.D…[he’s]…got… some stuff you can’t coach.” After being asked a similar question, Kendrick said, “The first name that come to mind is Adonai Mitchell. He showed some sparks last year…I just feel like he’s going to be one of the great ones.” Mitchell recorded 29 receptions for 426 yards and 4 touchdowns including his memorable 2nd and 18 40-yard bomb in January’s national championship.

While fans may be disappointed at the loss of familiar faces, there is most definitely plenty to look forward to in terms of potential. It seems that the Bulldogs are just one productive offseason away from another memorable season under Coach Kirby Smart.
