Did you know Georgia vs. Samford… ?

Samford

Samford has an impressive list of former head football coaches, including Bobby Bowden, Pat Sullivan and Terry Bowden.

Bobby Bowden and Jimbo Fisher, who have won a combined three national titles at Florida State, are amongst Samford’s notable gridiron alumni.

In 1935, Samford tied reigning Rose Bowl champion Alabama 7-7, the Crimson Tide featuring end Paul “Bear” Bryant.

Georgia

In 1943, Georgia (which didn’t play Auburn or Bama) won 39-0 over Howard College – the prior name of Samford until it changed in 1965.

Georgia has played a team from the state of Alabama in every season since a three-game slate against Clemson, Tech, and Virginia in 1897.

In 2003, Georgia defeated three teams from the state of Alabama – the Crimson Tide, UAB and Auburn en route to an 11-3 season.

In 1984, Georgia defeated Alabama 24-14 in Birmingham, with Andre “Pulpwood” Smith racing for two early scores to spark the Bulldogs victory.

Georgia beat UAB 34-0 in 2006, the Bulldogs second straight shutout following the sudden death of the beloved legendary icon Erk Russell.

Georgia’s 2002 SEC championship team became just the second team in history (Mississippi State 1997) to win at Bryant-Denny and Jordan-Hare in the same year.
