Georgia Football hosted its first scrimmage of spring practice last Saturday in the indoor athletic facility. Head coach Kirby Smart addressed the media after and expressed concerns about the secondary’s progress.

Smart explained to the media that the secondary has a long way to go. The Bulldogs secondary was one of the most experienced last season. Georgia lost three starters to graduation, so the staff must figure out what the next move is for that area.

We’ve got a long way to go in the secondary,” Smart states. “We had a unique unit of DBs that played a long time. With them gone, we’re trying to get some guys in here to fill that void. We’re not where we need to be, we don’t have the depth we need and we’re not playing at the level we need to play at. They’re going against some good quarterbacks and receivers at practice every day.”

Georgia’s secondary appears to be the biggest area of concern for Smart and his staff. However, one player in the secondary seems to be a bright light in the darkness. Smart complimented Mark Webb on his efforts throughout spring practice.

Mark Webb is one of the toughest kids I’ve coached. He won’t take himself out. He continues to grow and develop. He’s physical and tough, and I like that about him,” Smart says.

The Bulldogs return JR Reed, Deandre Baker, and Tyrique McGhee in the secondary. These three made impacts last season and should be your leaders this upcoming season. However, it doesn’t seem they’ve made noise with Smart just yet.

Reed started all 15 games last season and ranked second on the team with 79 tackles.  He recorded 5.0 tackles for a loss, 1.5 QB sacks, 2 interceptions, 5 pass breakups 6 QB pressures and two fumble recoveries. Baker is another guy that made a name for himself last season. He started 14 games and played in all 15. Baker finished with 44 tackles, which ranked fourth on the team. He led the Bulldogs in pass breakups with nine, including three against South Carolina. Baker was second on the team in interceptions with three. McGhee played in all 15 games and got two starts on the season. He recorded 25 total tackles, ranked second in pass breakups with six, forced a fumble, and one interception. Granted he didn’t make as big of an impact last season, he got to see a good bit of playing time.

Smart has three players with experience in the secondary, he just needs to fill out the rest of the lineup. However Smart doesn’t really note that he just believes they’ve got a long way to go before their ready to take on another team.
