Kirby Smart on Richard LeCounte: From Rat Trap to Grown Up

During Saturday’s press conference, head coach Kirby Smart addressed the media about freshmen, Richard LeCounte III. Smart praised the young defensive back for growing up since he arrived in January. Since enrolling early, LeCounte has improved in Smart’s eyes and grasps most of his duties.

Smart’s demeanor, when asked about LeCounte, showed just how proud he is of him. He talked about when Richard arrived at campus, the staff didn’t know what he would do on the field. LeCounte, according to Kirby, would run all over the place. And he labeled him as being a part of the rat trap. Smart’s rat trap sounds just like what it means, the player would run all over the place and just playing all the time.

“He’s gotten a lot better. He started in the spring and what I call rat trap, all over the place just playing and runs anywhere and does anything,” Smart stated.  “You never know what he was going to do.”

However, since then, Smart seems to think LeCounte’s matured a bit and knows his place a little better.

“Now, I think he understands 50-60 percent,” Smart said. “And we got to get him to 90 or 100 because the guy lining up next to him usually can tell him what to do with the ones. He didn’t have that luxury with the twos. So when he gets to go with the ones, which we did a line up where he’s in which is JR at Star, Dom at the other safety and Richard at the other safety. He does pretty good with them, but when he has to make all the decisions he struggles with it sometimes. He’s grown up now and he practices hard every day and he’s physical. I’m glad he was here in the spring so he could be where he is now.”

After Smart’s statement on Saturday, it’ll be nice to watch the young DB continue to improve and see if he makes a statement this fall.
