Kirby Smart appeared in Savannah last night and was asked about his plans for defensive play calling during the upcoming season. “Mel is going to call the defenses”, Smart replied.

Of course, Smart was referring to Georgia’s new defensive coordinator, Mel Tucker. Tucker followed Smart from Alabama to Athens last December. Smart went on to say:

It is a new experience for me to be a head coach. So, I certainly don’t need the burden of calling the defenses when I’m trying to oversee the whole, entire thing. I’ll be more involved with the defense then will be with the offense, but, certainly, Mel has called them a long time, called them in the NFL. That’s the plan going forward.

Greg is closing in on 15 years writing about and photographing UGA sports. While often wrong and/or out of focus, it has been a long, strange trip full of fun and new friends.
