[su_spacer size=”20″] Georgia’s No. 1-seeded team of Austin Smith and Ben Wagland advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Wichita State’s Tomislav Gregurovic and Tin Ostojic here Friday.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Smith and Wagland, now 18-3 on the season, will play Texas Tech’s Hugo Dojas and Felipe Soares (22) in the quarterfinals on Saturday. They are looking to become the first Georgia doubles team to reach the semifinals since John Isner and Luis Flores won the title in 2005 in College Station.
[su_spacer size=”40″] “We’re really happy to be in the quarterfinals,” Smith said. “Our opponents didn’t play as well today as they had been playing, but Ben and I tried to focus on ourselves and things went our way. Now we’re just ready for tomorrow.”
[su_spacer size=”40″] In the women’s championship, Georgia’s Lauren Herring and Ellen Perez fell to Florida’s Brooke Austin and Kourtney Keegan 7-5, 3-6, 6-3. The Gators broke to take a 5-3 lead in the third set, then served out the match.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Herring finishes her career with 118 career doubles wins, which is second all-time in program history. She also had 238 combined singles and doubles wins, also ranking second in the UGA record books.
