MEN’S TENNIS: Georgia To Host First & Second Rounds of NCAA Championships


[su_spacer size=”20″] The Georgia men’s tennis team received the No. 8 overall seed and was selected as one of 16 hosts for the first and second rounds of the NCAA Championships, it was announced Tuesday.

The Bulldogs (21-4) will take on Winthrop in the first round Friday, May 8 at 2 p.m., while Florida State will face Troy earlier in the day at 11 a.m. The winners will play Saturday at 3 p.m. for a spot in the round of 16. The later rounds and the individual singles and doubles tournaments will be held in Waco, Texas, May 14-25. Baylor University is the host institution.

“We’re very excited to be hosting the first and second rounds next week,” said head coach Manuel Diaz. “Our position in the draw is always challenging and exciting and very tough at the same time. We have to start fast. We have a very well-coached Winthrop team coming in the first round along with Troy and FSU. We are looking forward to getting our guys prepared and ready to play.”

Oklahoma earned the No. 1 overall seed, followed by Baylor, Virginia, Illinois, TCU, Texas A&M, USC, Georgia, Texas and No. 10 Duke.

The Bulldogs won the 2015 SEC regular season title and are making their 37th overall appearance in the tournament and 32nd in a row, entering with a record of 96-31. Georgia has reached the finals a total of 13 times, and the Bulldogs own six NCAA championships, most recently coming in back-to-back seasons in 2007-08.
[su_spacer size=”40″] The UGA women’s tennis team was also selected as a regional host – earning the No. 6 overall seed. The Bulldogs will open their tournament run against Charleston Southern on Saturday, May 9, with Duke and Purdue also making the trip to Athens.
