MEN’S TENNIS: Season Opens Today with Southern Intercollegiate Championships

[su_spacer size=”20″] The Georgia men’s tennis team will open the 2015-16 season Friday as it plays host to the 48th annual Southern Intercollegiate Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. The four-day tournament will feature 170 players from 28 different schools.
[su_spacer size=”40″] The field will be divided into three singles divisions and two doubles divisions, and no-ad scoring will be in place for both singles and doubles. The tournament includes players from the following schools: Arkansas, Armstrong State, Barry, Clemson, College of Charleston, Columbus State, Davidson, East Tennessee State, Eastern Kentucky, Florida Atlantic, Georgia, Georgia College, Georgia Gwinnett, Georgia State, Georgia Tech, Kennesaw State, Kentucky, Lander, Liberty, Lipscomb, Memphis, Mercer, Mississippi State, Saint Leo, Stetson, Tennessee Tech, Virginia Tech and Winthrop.
[su_spacer size=”40″] “We’re looking forward to opening our season here on Friday,” said head coach Manuel Diaz. “Our guys just started official practice this week, but they have been training and working hard, and I think they are ready to go.”
[su_spacer size=”40″] Eight Bulldogs will participate, including No. 1 seed and defending champion Wayne Montgomery. Austin Smith is seeded second, Nick Wood is 11th and Ben Wagland is 13th. Other Georgia players participating include Paul Oosterbaan, Andy Martinez and freshmen Walker Duncan and Emil Reinberg.
[su_spacer size=”40″] The Bulldog doubles pairs this weekend will be No. 1 seeds Smith and Wagland, Montgomery and Oosterbaan, Duncan and Wood, and Martinez and Reinberg.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Play is scheduled to begin Friday at 8 a.m. with Division I singles at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex followed by Division II singles. All Division III matches on Friday will be played at the UGA intramural courts. Day one action will conclude with Divisions I and II doubles. Updated draws, schedules and results will be posted throughout the tournament at GeorgiaDogs.com.
[su_spacer size=”40″] The ITA Collegiate Hall of Fame adjacent to the Dan Magill Tennis Complex will be open each day from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.
