Practice Observations from Fall Camp 8/7/22

For the second time during this Fall Camp, we were given access to observe practice. They’re a couple days into it now so it’s gotten pretty real. The coaches weren’t holding back, doing whatever they could to get the attention of their players to get them to want to be better. Here is what we saw.

  • Andrew Paul was given the opportunity to take hand-offs from Brock Vandagriff, indicating that (for at least this drill) Andrew Paul, a freshman running back from Texas, had earned himself 3rd team reps.
  • Coach Smart was chewing out freshman DB Julian Humphrey, “What are you doing, Julio!?” The Texas native was catching flak from Smart for the entirety of our observation time.
  • Chad Limburg and Jared Wilson were seen at 3rd team left tackle and left guard.
  • During a running back drill, the order of players was Kendall Milton, Kenny McIntosh, Daijun Edwards, Andrew Paul, and Branson Robinson. Some draws from this observation: Milton has earned 1st reps over McIntosh, and Andrew Paul was taking 4th team reps, but still above touted 5-star freshman, Branson Robinson.
  • Tight end order in a catch-and-run drill: Brock Bowers, Ryland Geode, Darnell Washington, Brett Seither (wearing a black jersey indicating some sort of injury), Arik Gilbert, Oscar Delp. Geode and Seither may be above Washington and Gilbert respectively because of seniority, they’re both 4th years while Washington and Gilbert are both 3rd years.
  • Like last Thursday’s practice Nolan Smith and Chazz Chambliss, Bobby Beal and MJ Sherman, and Marvin Jones and CJ Madden were paired with each other during sled drills.
  • Nolan Smith said, “Hey ‘lil Smart, move before you get hurt,” when Coach Smart’s son got too close to the sled mid-drill.
  • Darris Smith, a freshman linebacker out of Appling County, looks quite lengthy limbs-wise, but could put on some weight. He looks like more of a basketball player than a football player right now.
  • Freshman Christen Miller was out of the black jersey wearing white today. Looks like he recovered from whatever he was enduring.
  • Zion Logue (96) and Tramel Walthour (90) were paired and led the rest of the d-line group in a drill. Bill Norton (45) and Nazir Stackhouse (78) followed suit. The drill was getting off a block with a roll move, regaining footing, and moving to the ball.
  • Tray Scott is pretty chill if they’re hustling. His catchphrases today during a drill concerned with taking on an OL: “Attack his tip,” “Be physical with your hands,” and “Get yourself across that line.”
  • Bear Alexander, a freshman d-lineman who had an offseason procedure, was taking the last reps of each drill, but he’s wearing a white jersey, not black. Seems his recovery is going smoothly.
  • Smael Mondon looked really quick in a reaction drill for Coach Schumann.
  • Rian Davis, also in Schumann’s group, seems fully recovered from his injuries and at full speed.
  • “You either want contact or you don’t,” Kirby Smart.
  • Seeing MJ Sherman take reps after Nolan Smith is reassuring. He’s been waiting his turn and looked great in comparison to the senior.
  • Freshman receiver Dillon Bell earned a little bit of praise from Coach Smart, “Nice route Dillon.”
