Terry Godwin has definitely stepped up as one of the Bulldogs’ leaders and he showed his leadership qualities most recently in his words to Mecole Hardman on Saturday after a key mistake.

Mecole Hardman’s muffed punt in the Bulldogs loss to the Auburn Tigers is definitely one of the Bulldogs most notable mistakes, but junior wide receiver Terry Godwin made sure to not let this mistake get the best of Hardman.

“I just told him that he’s got to have a short-term memory with things like that because stuff like that can affect your whole game and the rest of your season,” said Godwin. “So you just want to let stuff go. Be better on the next play. Do your best.”

Godwin knows that having a key mistake cost your team is no foreign feeling for any player and just moving on from the play is what you need to do, even though it may be the most difficult task at the time. However, he also understands that hearing words of encouragement from an older player on the team can help alleviate the situation as he knows from his own experience.

“It’s always good to hear it from an older guy, or somebody you trust, to help get it out of your system,” said Godwin. “It’s happened to everybody. We’ve all messed up and you feel like it’s cost your team a game or something like that. It’s happened to me before and I told him the exact same thing. You’ve just got to forget about it.”

Seeing the leadership step up at a difficult time has to be encouraging for coach Smart as his Bulldogs will need to have a short-term memory as they prepare to face the Wildcats this Saturday.
