The Great “Problem”: Fromm or Fields?

Jake Fromm – 2017 season rewind – Georgia vs. Florida

This time last year, Kirby Smart had a great problem. Would he start with former 5-star and now sophomore Jacob Eason or incoming freshman Jake Fromm? Turns out Smart didn’t have to choose as Eason injured his knew into eh first game of the 2017 season. We all know the story from there as home-grown star Jake Fromm led the Bulldogs to an SEC Championship and a National Championship game appearance.

This year, there is a similar “problem”. After never being able to regain the position, Jacob Eason transferred back home to play for the Huskies of Washington. Fromm looks to build in his spectacular freshman season. So, the question is? Where does former 5-star recruit Justin Fields fit?

Fields was ranked the No. 2 quarterback recruit in the nation. He had been touted as a can’t-miss prospect, with a ton of talent and intangibles. After hearing his scouting report, there is no doubt you must find a way to get him on the field. However, the issue in doing that is that you would be replacing a quarterback, who as a freshman, led the Bulldogs to a conference title and was just mere seconds from bringing a national championship back to Athens. How can you justify replacing that?

It is a great problem to have if you are Kirby Smart. In case of injury, the talent is there for the Bulldogs to pick up right where they left off from last year. I feel that this is Fromm’s job to lose. We all know what Fromm can do at this level and I believe that he is only scratching the surface of his potential. Fields, while I believe he has the raw talent to come in and start, could benefit from learning behind Fromm and getting playing time in a mop-up duty. I think we would see Fields help in a big way in 2018.

In the end, this is Smart’s decision. He will ultimately decide who will be under center when the Bulldogs tee it up in September. We know there will be a battle and Smart will let the best man play no matter how old or experience.
