LETTER FROM THE EDITOR: UGA Homecoming represents generations of Dawgs supporting team

Homecoming at Georgia represents generations of Dawgs supporting their team, but a win is what ensures a special weekend.

Happy half regular season to everyone in the Bulldog Nation. And at 6-0, life couldn’t get much better for our coach, team and fan base. However, by now, you should know that I’m not one to bask in the sunlight when discussing Georgia football. My only reason for bringing up our 6-0 record is to point out the obvious … there is still a ton of football games to be played.

As fans, I know it’s difficult not to look ahead as we are all starving for that magical season. However, do that at your own peril.

As is normally the case during a college football season, there are weeks when a highly ranked team falls to a team that no one gave a chance. This past Saturday, the Oklahoma Sooners were an almost 30 point favorite over Iowa State. By the end of the day, Boomer Sooner went home as shocked losers.

On Saturday night, our Dawgs welcome Missouri to Athens for homecoming. For the Tigers from the Show Me state, the 2017 season has been dismal. However, they will arrive to Sanford Stadium with absolutely nothing to lose. This, my friends, represents a dangerous game as far as I’m concerned.

While Mizzou sports a lowly 1-4 record, they do possess an offense that shows significant capability in the passing game. It’s easy to just assume our Dawgs’ awesome defense is going to shut down every opponent each week, but I prefer to remain steadfast in the belief that at some point one of our opponents is going to find some cracks. Call me a pessimist if you like, but I much prefer to celebrate our team’s prowess after the final whistle each week, than talking hype the week leading into the next game.

Thankfully, our head coach appears to share similar beliefs as mine. Kirby is an absolute perfectionist and that was clearly shown by his choice words with how his defense played in the first half versus Vandy. And guess what … that same unit absolutely stifled the Commodores in the final two frames of the 45-14 victory.

For the Georgia offense, I do think some kudos must be given out regarding the dominating performance in Nashville. Behind our vastly improved offensive line, all five of our running backs pounded the Commodores all day. And once again when given the chance to pull the trigger, Jake Fromm found receivers on successful, long plays.

With this being said, I do encourage you to check out Murray Poole’s Stats that Matter on page 51. We came up with this feature probably 10 years ago, and unfortunately, back then each of these stats represented areas where our team consistently underperformed. How nice to now read this page and see some of the impressive numbers now being put up.

Back to Mizzou and this week’s homecoming game.

For this issue, Cheri and I wanted to come up with a special feature that captured the essence of what homecoming represents, so we were happy to discover the unique story of two different sets of friends (Hal Greer/JohnO Knox and Tom Allen/Matt Moseley) who roomed together while attending Georgia. What makes the story so unique is that over 20 years later, their children are now also rooming together at Georgia. Enjoy reading the story on page 28. Without question, it will make you relive your own glory days at Georgia. Isn’t that what homecoming is supposed to be?

I do encourage our fan base to make every effort to come to Athens this weekend to enjoy homecoming. Like every year, the parade will start at 6 p.m. on Friday in downtown. After the parade, a carnival will take place at Legion Field from 7-11 p.m. with games, midway rides, and food.

Then on Saturday night, our Dawgs take the field with the opportunity to go into their off week with a perfect record. As I’ve already stated, I look for Mizzou to give their very best effort, so it is imperative that our fans show up ready to rumble. Of course, I wouldn’t expect anything less from the red and black faithful, who each week continue to amaze with their support of our team. Don’t you love this photo that BI’s Greg Poole captured at Vandy? Obviously, the ‘Dores won’t be using it in any of their promotional efforts.

Also, just a reminder that our next issue comes out Oct. 23. Our BI team is looking forward to our own off week while we celebrate the news of Justin Fields’ commitment.

Alright Bulldog Nation, get some rest from all that fun you had in Nashville. Wow, that city sure is a blast. See you in Sanford on Saturday night. Go Dawgs!!!
