Bulldogs Recruiting Rewind: April was Hot and Cold for Georgia

RAREBREEED2018-edit-by-Bob-Miller

The month of April was marked by some ups and downs when it came to the college football recruiting trail for the Georgia Bulldogs.

And many Dog fans are probably wondering what was so ‘hot’ or ‘up’ about Georgia’s football recruiting last month? Granted, before the G-Day spring game on Saturday, April 22 saw Rome High School’s 2018 defensive end/outside linebacker Adam Anderson flip his commitment from UGA to LSU, and just a few days later, a major 2018 defensive end offer and target for the Bulldogs chose Ohio State over staying home in the Peach State. But it was not all doom and gloom.

The Dogs did have a who’s who list of recruiting prospects at G-Day, who from all accounts and reports came away very impressed from their visit. Plus, UGA also picked up the number one kicker/punter for the 2018 class, Jake Camarda, after the G-Day spring game.

A confirmed 63 prospects visited Athens, GA for G-Day and there was likely more than that in the Classic City on that sunny, spring, Saturday. For the month of April, UGA hosted a total of 110 unofficial visits from prospects. You can find a visitors’ list down below.

Georgia also sent out quite a few offers during the month of April. In fact, the Bulldogs sent out a total of 51 confirmed offers. Over half of those, 26, were to class of 2018 prospects, and the rest of the offers breaks down as follows: 18 class of 2019 prospects, six class of 2020 prospects, and one class of 2021 prospects. The Bulldogs targeted and offered a slew of wide receivers out of those 51. A total of 23 offers went out to wideouts last month. Below you will find a full listing of offers for the month of April.

Looking ahead to this merry month of May, what is in store for UGA football recruiting?

An ‘evaluation period’ for this 2017 recruiting cycle began on Monday, May 1st and will last until the end of May on Wednesday the 31st with the exception of Sundays and the Memorial Day holiday. Also in effect, is a ‘quiet period’ for the entire month of May and the ‘quiet period’ stays in effect till June 25th.

During the quiet period, coaches and staff members are not allowed to have any off-campus in-person, face-to-face contact with a recruiting prospect, but are allowed to have prospects and their parents or guardians visit the campus of the school. Electronic communication including phone calls and texts are allowed with the restriction of one call per week per prospect. Since there is also an evaluation period, institutions are allowed to send an authorized recruiter off-campus and may “use one evaluation to assess the prospective student athlete’s athletics ability and one evaluation to assess the prospective student-athlete’s academic qualifications during this evaluation period.”

That means we will see some of the coaches that are authorized off-campus recruiters head out to evaluate prospects that they already have offers out to and targets that need further evaluation before an offer is sent out. In addition, there will be more unofficial visits to Athens, GA from prospective student-athletes. But the big question is; will the Bulldogs get a commitment from a 2018 prospect?

Last year, UGA only had one commitment for the 2017 class during the month of May, and that was Trey Blount who committed to UGA on 05/01/2016, and it looks like lightning struck again for the Dogs on May 1st as 2018 cornerback Chris Smith II announced his commitment to Georgia on Monday evening shortly before 6:30 p.m. ET; CLICK HERE to read more about it.

I am hopeful, that the Dogs will get at least one commitment for the 2018 class during the month of May, but last year, the Bulldogs only had the Blount commitment on May 1st. The next one didn’t come until June 1st, 2016 when Matt Landers announced his commitment to Georgia. As to who might be the next to pull the trigger, your guess is as good as mine, but even if May comes and goes without another commitment, Chris Smith is a big time pick up at DB and I do think Georgia will get good news in June. The 27th of June to be exact when Zamir White is set to announce.
