Justin Fields suffered an injury to the finger of his right throwing hand during the third quarter of Harrison High School’s game with Dalton on Thursday night, and on Friday, the Hoyas’ Head Coach, Matt Dickmann, confirmed that the diagnosis was a broken finger which he’ll have surgery on, on Monday.

“ ‘Justin called (from the doctor’s) this morning,’ Dickmann said. ‘The finger is broken. He is going to have surgery on Monday,’ ” per John Bednarowski of the Marietta Daily Journal.

Justin’s father, Pablo Fields, provided additional details to DawgNation’s Jeff Sentell:

” ‘Done for the season,’ Pablo Fields shared in a text message with Dawgnation. ‘Surgery Monday. Pretty common surgery. Clean break. A full recovery is expected.’ “

” ‘He’ll be good-to-go in six weeks (and) then maybe six weeks of physical therapy,’ Pablo Fields added. “’It is a pretty common injury. Two pins. Takes about 30 minutes and anesthesia.’ “

I spoke with a couple of orthopedic surgeons who specialize in hand injuries, and both said that a phalanx fracture that requires surgery to fixate with pins or screws takes about two to three months for a full recovery. That time frame includes healing from the surgery, 4-6 weeks for the bone to mend, and then usually 6-8 weeks of physical therapy.

In other words, while Justin Fields is likely to miss the rest of his high school football season with Harrison, he’ll be back slinging the ‘ole pigskin around by the end of January. The 2018 quarterback prospect committed to Georgia just a couple of weeks ago on October 6th and is still pondering the decision to enroll early at UGA or to stay at Harrison and play his final season of high school baseball this spring.
