Yesterday, 2018 defenisve lineman Stephon Wynn, Jr. verbally committed to Alabama over South Carolina and UGA. Wynn is a major target for the Bulldog coaching staff, and with Brenton Cox committing to Ohio State back in April over the Dogs and then TK Chimedza and Darnell Jefferies choosing the Yellow Jackets and Clemson respectively last month, also all major targets, is it time to hit the panic button for Georgia’s defensive line recruiting for 2018 yet? Not quite…

After Georgia only took 3 defensive linemen in the 2017 recruiting class signing Robert Beal, Jr., Malik Herring, and DeVonte Wyatt, all eyes were on 2018 as that being one of the position groups that is a priority for the coaching staff. Out of those three, only Herring and Wyatt are true d-linemen with Beal being more of a hybrid WDE/OLB, and only Herring has enrolled as Beal and Wyatt are still waiting to be cleared through the NCAA eligibility center. Hopefully, both Beal and Wyatt will clear sometime this month and be able to enroll for fall semester, but if they do not, then that puts even more, pressure on Georgia as far as 2018 d-line recruiting is concerned.

The good news is that National Signing Day is still seven months out, and there are still a number of very talented undeclared d-line prospects that have offers from UGA and the Bulldogs have the potential of getting commitments from and signing. As it stands right now, out of Georgia’s seven 2018 commits, none are defensive tackles, nose tackles, or strong-side defensive ends; so, out of this group of 12, who is most likely to commit to the Bulldogs and when?

Liberty County High School’s Tramel Walthour is a very good candidate and could announce his decision very soon… if not in July then most likely in August before football season gets rolling. Clinch County High School’s John Mincey is another Peach State d-lineman that is a big Georgia lean at the moment. I would also keep your eye on Montgomery, Alabama defensive tackle Alfred Thomas, which is an Auburn-Georgia battle at the moment, and on another state of Alabama prospect, Lee High School’s Malik Langham. Then there is a defensive tackle out of Concord, North Carolina, Rick Sandidge. The Bulldogs new d-line coach, Tray Scott, recruited Sandidge while he was the Tarheel’s staff and Sandidge likes Scott. Another Peach State d-lineman that I would put on commitment watch is Hapeville Charter Career Academy’s Kingsley Enagbare. A former high school teammate of Enagbare who is now a Bulldog, defensive back William Poole III has been in his ear as often as he can be.

And I also don’t think the battle for Wynn is over. Yes. He is verbally committed to Alabama, but this was very close. He was a heavy Georgia favorite within 48 hours of his announcement on Saturday when the Tide took the lead. Yes. He stated he would not be taking any more visits in his interview, but those are unofficial visits and off campus visits from the coaching staffs of other programs. Wynn will still take his five official visits this fall, and Georgia would be a good candidate for one of those five visits. And if there are any coaching changes on the defensive side of the ball for the Crimson Tide, that could also push Wynn back to UGA.

If you are wondering why I didn’t list players like KJ Henry, Azeez Ojulari, Micah Parsons, or Caleb Tannor, all very good edge rushers and football players, it is because they are WDE/OLB hybrids. Our focus here is on the meat and potatoes up front on the defensive side of the ball; I’m talking about true DTs or hybrid SDE/DT’s who could play either 3 or 5 technique and inside or outside. So, how many DTs and SDEs will Georgia take for 2018? I still think Kirby Smart and company are shooting to take at least four if not five, especially after only taking two in 2017.
