The No. 25-ranked UGA men’s golf team began their 2017 fall schedule, teeing off at the Carmel Cup at Pebble Beach Golf Links on Friday, and after the first round, the Bulldogs stand in seventh.

Georgia fired a 1-over 361 on the par-72, 6,828-yard layout in their first round of the fall portion of the schedule. Oklahoma State leads the eight-team field after shooting a 22-under 338. In second place, Oklahoma trails the Cowboys by 10 strokes with a 10-under 350 card.

Freshman Davis Thompson paced the Bulldogs on Friday with a 2-under 70 and he stands tied for 15th individually, six strokes shy of the leader Hayden Woods of Oklahoma State (8-under 64). Thompson, of Auburn, Ala., holed four birdies and made an efficient 12 pars in his first collegiate round of 18.

Georgia’s sole senior Zach Healy accumulated a team-high 13 pars for the next best Georgia card, a 1-under 71 – good for 20th place. Sophomore Spencer Ralston followed with an even-par 72 and a team-best five birdies for a share of 26th.

The final two Bulldogs in the field, sophomores Trevor Phillips and Will Chandler, finished with 2-over 74s. Junior David Mackey was a late scratch due to illness. The tournament format consists of six players competing with five counting (as opposed to the typical five players with four counters).

Golfers teed off on Friday with 63-degree weather with no wind, but temperatures rose to as high as 101 degrees and wind up to 14 mph.

The Carmel Cup will continue on Saturday and will conclude on Sunday. Live results and tee times can be found at Golfstat.com.
