Men's Golf: Phillips Brothers Advance at U.S. Amateur

Brothers Trevor and Trent Phillips of the Georgia men’s golf team advanced to the Round of 32 in the match play portion of the 118th U.S. Amateur Championship at Pebble Beach Golf Links on Wednesday.
Trevor, a junior for the Bulldogs, dispatched Michael Thorbjornsen 4&3. The match was all square through nine holes, then Trent won Nos. 10, 12, 13 and 15 to claim the victory. The elder Phillips opened the stroke play competition with a 4-under 68 on Spyglass Hill Golf Course on Monday and then signed for a 7-over 78 Tuesday on Pebble Beach Golf Links to land 46th and seeded 61st in the 65-man field. Thorbjornsen was seeded fourth after finishing at 4-under 139.
Trent, an incoming freshman for Georgia, topped Riley Elmes 3&2 on Wednesday. Trent claimed three holes on the front nine, then capped the match by taking No. 15. Trent was steady during stroke play, firing even-par 72 on Spyglass Hill Golf Course and even-par 71 on Pebble Beach Golf Links to finish 19th and earn the 21st seed. Elmes was seeded 44th at 2-over 145.
Trevor will take on Isaiah Salinda at 11:40 a.m. Thursday, while Trent will face William Mouw at 12:10 p.m. in the Round of 32. The Round of 16 will follow later Thursday at approximately 5 p.m. The Phillips brothers could not face each other until the quarterfinals on Friday.
