MEN’S GOLF: Sepp Straka Advances at US Amateur Championship

[su_spacer size=”20″] Georgia’s Sepp Straka advanced in the match play por [su_spacer size=”40″]tion of the 2015 U.S. Amateur Championship on Wednesday at Olympia Fields Country Club.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Straka, a senior, finished tied for eighth in the stroke play portion Monday and Tuesday with rounds of 3-under 67 and 1-over 71 for a total of 2-under 138. On Wednesday, Straka dispatched Garrett Rank 3&2. Straka trailed by two after four holes, but squared the match after seven holes. He closed the match by winning Nos. 14-16.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Straka will face Derek Bard in the Round of 32 on Thursday at 8:50 a.m. Bard topped Davis Riley 4&3 on Wednesday.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Also on Wednesday, senior Lee McCoy dropped a 3&2 decision to Hunter Stewart. McCoy held a 2-up lead through five holes, but Stewart rallied by winning four straight holes to go 2-up. After McCoy took the 10th hole, Stewart got the cushion he needed by winning Nos. 12 and 13. Later this year, McCoy and Stewart will be teammates on the United States Walker Cup Team. McCoy, the 2014 U.S. Amateur medalist, came in fourth in stroke play at 4-under 136 with rounds of 4-under 66 and even-par 70.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Sophomore Zach Healy missed the cut at 10-over 150 in stroke play.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Thursday’s Round of 32 and Round of 16 matches will be shown on USGA.org from 11-1 p.m. and on Fox Sports 1 from 3-6 p.m.
