Georgia vs. North Carolina: Gymdogs Get Road Win

The eighth-ranked Georgia gymnastics team claimed its first road win of the season with a 196.200-195.200 victory over North Carolina Saturday afternoon at Carmichael Arena.

Brittany Rogers took top honors on vault and beam, Chelsea Davis turned in her season-high on bars, and Ashlyn Broussard equaled her career-best on vault to lead the way for the Gymdogs (3-4).

“We had some strong individual performances today,” said Georgia coach Danna Durante. “Ashlyn Broussard was strong on all three events today, Brittany Rogers did a great job, and Chelsea Davis had her high score of the year on bars. We had some good individual performances, but we need to keep working on putting it together as a team. We are looking forward to being back in Athens next week for a blackout against Alabama.”

Georgia grabbed the lead early with a 49.225 on bars behind Davis’ 9.925 and Natalie Vaculik’s season-high 9.875. The Gymdogs then went to vault and posted a 49.25. Broussard and Rogers took top honors with back-to-back 9.9s in the middle of the lineup, and at the halfway point Georgia led 98.475-97.425.

Mary Beth Box paced Georgia on floor with a 9.875 in the third rotation, followed by a 9.85 by North Carolina native Sarah Persinger. UGA led 147.575-146.050 through three rotations.

Rogers posted her second 9.9 of the day on beam in the final rotation, but the Gymdogs had to count a fall and scored a 48.625.

Morgan Lane won the all-around with a 39.175 to lead the way for North Carolina (9-4). The Gymdogs did not have an all-around competitor.

Georgia will compete at home in almost a month when it welcomes Alabama to Stegeman Coliseum Friday at 7 p.m. The meet will be televised live on the SEC Network.
