The Georgia gymnastics team will open the home portion of its 2016 campaign as the No. 10 Gymdogs entertain No. 25 Stanford on Monday at Stegeman Coliseum.
Monday’s meet will get under way at 2 p.m. and can be seen on SEC Network +.
The Gymdogs are 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the SEC following season-opening road meets at Michigan and Arkansas. The Cardinal (3-1, 0-1 Pac-12) is coming off a second-place finish at the NorCal Classic at San Jose State.
“I want to see a continuation of the momentum that we’ve built, or started to build,” Georgia head coach Danna Durante said. “I’m proud of the toughness, the resilience, the confidence in each other we saw at Arkansas on Friday. We talked about courage and confidence this week, and it was really fun to showcase those things on the floor. We hope that will continue into Monday’s meet against Stanford.”
“The most exciting part of being at home is definitely the crowd,” sophomore Gigi Marino said. “Last year as a freshman, I remember standing at the back of the vault runway and really hearing our fans for the first time. There’s nothing like that. It will be a cool experience for our freshmen. I remember it being one of my favorite moments.”
“I’m most excited for the fans and the crowd and the support we get being at home for a meet,” senior Brittany Rogers said. “Being back with my team and our fans, that’s so exciting. I can’t imagine having a better team or fans to celebrate my senior year with.”
Rogers won her first all-around title of the season against the Razorbacks as she registered a 39.425, punctuated by 9.9s on bars and beam. With Rogers leading the way, Georgia ranks No. 5 nationally on vault, No. 6 on floor and No. 7 on bars.
Georgia leads the overall series with Stanford 20-2-1, including a 6-1 mark in dual meets. Stanford won the last meeting, a 2014 dual in Palo Alto, Calif.
Following Monday’s competition, Georgia will return to action on Friday at 8 p.m. at Missouri. It will be the Gymdogs’ third road meet in four competitions. After visiting Kentucky on Jan. 29, Georgia will have three straight meets at Stegeman Coliseum – Florida on Feb. 5, LSU on Feb. 12 and Oklahoma on Feb. 20.
