SOCCER: Mississippi State and Missouri on Tap for This Weekend

[su_spacer size=”20″] The Georgia soccer team is set to play two Southeastern Conference games this weekend, one at home and one on the road.   The team plays host to Mississippi State on Friday night at 7 p.m. ET at the Tuner Soccer Complex before heading to Columbia, Missouri on Sunday to take on Missouri at 2 p.m. ET.

Last time out: Georgia lost a tight battle on the road to, 1-0, to Tennessee during a rain-soaked game in Knoxville. The Volunteers were first on the board in the 60’ when Amy Neal scored a header off of a corner kick.

Bulldog goalkeeper Louise Hogrell highlighted the match for the team with several impressive saves. The Asa, Sweden native made leaping stops on multiple occasions to keep the Volunteers from scoring. Georgia had several opportunities to score, but was unable to find its footing on the wet turf late in the game.

Looking at the Bulldogs: Mississippi State (3-6-3, 1-2-2) comes to Athens on Friday night fresh off of a 4-0 loss to Texas A&M. The Bulldogs own one SEC victory over Arkansas and ties against Tennessee and Missouri. Mississippi State’s other two victories came against Nicholls State and Lipscomb.

The Bulldogs are similar to Georgia in the fact that they have gotten better over the course of the season after a slow start. Mississippi State began the season 0-4, but since that mark has gone 3-2-3 with both loses coming on the road during conference play.

The team is led on offense by freshman Kiley Martins, who has four goals on the season. Martins is an accurate shooter with 64.3-percent of her shots being on goal. Goalkeeper Tanya de Souza leads the SEC with 30 saves in conference games alone.

Georgia holds a 14-3 all-time record over Mississippi State including winning the last 7.

Looking at the Tigers: Missouri (5-3-4, 3-1-1) owns two top-10 victories on the season Auburn and Kentucky. The Tigers are coming off of a 2-1 victory over Ole Miss last Friday night. The team’s lone conference loss came at home to South Carolina.

 

Missouri is a team that likes to get a lot of shots off during the game. They rank second in the SEC with 223 total shots this season for an average of 18.58 per game. The Tigers are also one of the best defensive teams in the conference, conceding only 10 goals this season.

 

They spread it out offensively with nine players having scored at least one goal. Sophomore midfielder Savannah Tujillo leads the way with four goals on the season.

 

The schools have only met three times before, with Missouri holding a 2-1 advantage. The Tigers won last year’s match in Athens, 2-0.
